BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha reiterated the government’s intention to press ahead with investments in special economic zones but would make sure that the projects would cause the least impacts on the people.

He asked the media to try to help the people understand the need of the projects and how important they are for the country’s development.

However, he said that the government would invest in special economic zones which have more potentials than the others such as the SEZs in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai, Mae Sot district of Tak and Sadao district of Songkhla.

While first priority is to be given to the SEZs which have more potentials, the prime minister assured that this does not mean that the government would stop investing in the other SEZs.

He asked people in the areas designated as SEZs not to believe in rumour mongers that they will all be evicted to make way for the development of the projects.

“Why drive away the people when the projects have not started yet?” he asked.

Doubting that the PM has an economics degree or commercial management experience, would he be kind enough to inform this forum who it was that advised him to come up with this idea?

It probably was advice from Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Somkid Jatusripitak. He formely served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Commerce in Thaksin Shinawatra's government. See his CV at http://www2.mof.go.th/accessibility/minister/www2somkid.html
