BANGKOK: -- The Sathorn Model which was used to solve notorious traffic gridlock on Sathorn road will be applied for use to tackle traffic problem at Rama VIII and Rama IX bridges, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit disclosed on Tuesday.

He said that Sathorn Model was put on trial on Sathorn road during June 6-17 and the result was satisfactory. He added that he would propose to the Land Traffic Management Committee the same model to be used to solve traffic problem at the two bridges because the problem there was similar to that on Sathorn road.

The result of the trial use of Sathorn Model with the opening of a special traffic lane and a space for park and ride during 6-7 am showed that the number of cars passing through Sathorn intersection has increased 3.5 percent or an addition of 320 cars per hour.

The trial opening of a special traffic lane from Sathorn intersection to Saint Louis hospital during June 13-17 showed that the number of cars passing through Sathorn intersection has increased by 671 cars per hour and average car speed from Taksin station of the BTS system to Narinthorn intersection increased by 26-28 percent.

During the rush hours from 5-7 pm, the number of cars passing through Sathorn intersection increased 3.5 percent or an addition of 161 cars. The park and ride space at Krung Thon BTS station managed to shorten travelling time by 20 minutes and cut short travelling distance by 11 kms.
