Chevrolet want to charge me for resetting computer in vehicle only 9 months old

I bought a new Chevrolet pick-up last November.

Recently, I took it in for an oil change and a couple of weeks later the computer came up with the message that the engine oil; needs to be changed soon.

I called the dealer and they said to bring the vehicle in and they will re-set the computer and charge me 500 Baht.

Now it's not the 500 Baht - it's the principle. Surely the car is still under warranty and anything like this should be fixed free of charge? What happens if the engine blows up? Will I have to pay for a new engine even though the vehicle is less than a year old?

Some years ago I had a BMW and it was 3 years old when the computer went on the blink. They replaced the whole thing - which must have been very expensive - free of charge, and my wife had a little Nissan that was always getting fixed free of charge, so I don't understand what Chevvy are all about. We even called Chevvy in Bangkok and they confirmed that the charge was in order.

Anyone else had experience with new car warranties here?

Thanks,

Mobi

Perhaps it was a admin fee?

My wife brought in our Toyota for its first free service in Hua Hin last time only to get a bill

Free service = free labour.

Not sure if this helps you, but it's doesn't cost you anything to try it:

In my opinion, if Chevrolet changed the oil with the last service and the light comes on shortly after the service, it is very bold to try to charge you again  just to "reset" the freakin light, because they forgot to reset it in the first place.

If you make the service somewhere else or yourself it is understandable to charge for the reset. BMW also charges you in that case.

off topic but

http://www.headlightmag.com/salesreport-jun-2016/

Toyota, Isuzu and Honda sold combined aprox. 235.000 in 2016. Chevrolet managed to shift 6926 cars in the first half of 2016. Even Ford sold three times as much cars.

With more reports like yours Chevrolet makes sure to keep it on that level.

Shameful, but I understand. Chevrolet is part of GM or Government Motors! These people are incompetent. I would suggest

buying a FORD next time to save you money and a better quality product!

I don't want to turn this thread into a "which pickup is best?" I've previously owned a Toyota, a  Mitshubishi, a Nissan and a Ford, and I have to say so far  I am very satisfied with my Chevrolet Colorado. It goes very well and has all mod cons such as Sat Nav etc. We test drove and studied all the current 4 door models before opting for the Chevy It's all down to what you're looking for.

I have checked and it has a 'bumper to bumper' 3 year/100,000kms warranty, so I don't understand where this charge has come from. I shall contact the people in Bangkok and see what they have to say. If I don't get satisfaction I shall l refer it to GM USA.

Sometimes Thais don't seem to understand the concept of warranties, they want their cake and eat it as well.

I am guessing that because we had the oil change before the warning light went on the computer, they forgot to reset it and now they expect us to pay for their time.

OP you bought a chevrolet pickup, well you did better than me.

2 months ago we were looking for a new pickup, we looked at Toyota, Isuzu, wanted to look at chevrolet

on their website order a test drive, choose your dealer in our case the 1 on Mittrapap road in Khonkaen.

Ordered the test drive, they were bringing a pickup to our home ( still waiting ) i phoned the dealer to ask why they did not keep the appointment, lady who answered the phone said  !! solly no English !! then hung up on me.

Well if that is the same as their after sales service just your bad luck.

For what....?

She told me they wanted several thousand baht to change the brakes pads, timing belts, filters etc.

We've barely used the car so luckily my wife told them to only change the oil.

I'm really happy with Chev service of my Colorado.  It had a dash rattle and asked them to look at it and it turned out to be a coin trapped in there.  No charge.  They also wash it every time.  That's a first! It sounds like they forgot to reset the light,  they are taking the piss to charge you to do it.

As I said, I didn't want to turn this thread into a 'model war' but I too am very happy with the vehicle. (Colorado High Country)This model has received good reviews in Oz and it compares very favourably with my Mitsu Triton that I used to have - i.e it's better. I think it has a new engine and it's loads of oomph. I'm not a motorhead so I can't really give an expert opinion, but from a driver's perspective, I'm very happy. Price is competitive esp taking into account all the standard extras. They don't have the same profile in Thailand as Toyota, Honda and Isuzu so it doesn't surprise me that their sales are much lower. The second-hand value is also lower, for the same reasons.

By far and away the best dealer as far as service is concerned, in my experience is Nissan. They were always giving away freebies, calling to ask if we were happy with the service, and doing a great job when we took it in. Toyota and Honda are pretty good, but you have to find the right dealer. Mitsu was also quite okay. Ford was always a pain  and Chevy is the only dealer I've come across that insists on an appointment before you take it in. You cannot just turn up as you can with the other makes.

Clearly, they are taking the piss with this re-setting lark

On the Trailblazer you turned ignition to get the error code to show, then held down the enter button on the computer, then you turned off the ignition. It cleared it.... It was a truck like vehicle so i presume all Chev engines with an onboard thingy do the same.

I purchased a chevy optra here in Pattaya 11 years ago ,it is still going great guns, hardly any problems and then only small , at first the service dept was first class , they even dropped you off home and then picked you up when the car was ready ,over the years i found the service to get worse , now have not used them for 5 years , however as i said the car is 1st class

Did you get the oil change done at the dealer or some other place.  If the latter you have just voided your total warrantee.  If at the dealer they should have reset the warning when the change was done.

The fee was waived after I protested.

I'm still not happy with the service dept - they said the brake pads only have 40% tread remaining- after only 20K kms, and will need replacing soon. I'm not convinced.

As far as the vehicle itself is concerned - still very happy, pity about the service.

Glad you got it sorted Mobi, it's annoying when you have to protest but keep at it.

I can't see that they'll do anything about your brake pads, they'll not be covered under  warranty. That all depends on how the car is driven I would have thought.

If the vehicle is good then be happy for that ;), good thing you've not got a Ford Fiesta :giggle:
