ubonjoe
You can do the crossing at the bridge in Nong Khai. You need to get a Lao visa on arrival. They have a space on the application form for an address in Laos. You could put the name for any hotel in Vientiane to put there. You can cross and come right back. You can pay 1500 baht or 30 to 42 US dollars dependent upon your nationality. See: http://www.laos-guide-999.com/visa-on-arrival.html I have read that you can get USD in Udon. Thanyaburi Mac
It's cheaper to pay for the Lao Visa On Arrival in U.S. $$$, depending on your nationality, for Americans it's $35. You should be able to exchange baht to $$ at most any bank in Udorn. Be sure to get nice clean crisp bills with no writing on them, otherwise often not acceptable to Lao Immigration. I usually put down the Mali Namphou GH in Vientiane, have stayed there in the past. Mac
