What is happening to the 300 baht a day rate minimum wage for the non-skilled workforce. If this just a smoke and mirrors populist announcement on referendum day. Should it not have been announced a day or two ago? Once again I am left scratching my head. If the old rate of pay for these jobs was 300 baht a day that is a hefty increase for the economy to support. It sounds a lot like the system used in Oz many years back where there was a minimum wage level set for unskilled workers and different trades had various skill loadings - a percentage increase over MW for recognised qualifications. KKr
A few years ago there was talk about minimum wage to 15.000 , wasn't there? Did that not happen to prevent the economy going down ? Or am I completely mixing things up here.?

Sent from my SC-01D using Tapatalk Haven't noticed a currency crash, doubt I will. The wage rise is limited to certain trades,so will have limited effect,on goods and services. I certainly won't be tightening my belt any.

You are right, it was a recommendation. A newspaper clip from 2011 refers, that is probably where my confusion is coming from. : BANGKOK—The Thai government will raise the minimum monthly wage of civil servants to 15,000 baht (about $500) as of Jan. 1, Deputy Finance Minister Viroon Techapaiboon said. The increase from the current 10,000 baht will cost the government 20 billion baht a year, he said on Thursday. The government also hopes to encourage private-sector companies to raise the starting monthly salary of newly graduated employees to 15,000 baht.Source: The Wall Street Journal, Sept. 2, 2011 Edited August 7, 2016 by KKr
cracker1
Anyone know how to arrange to complete the required test ? "But she said workers must have to pass the national labour skill standard test of their jobs to get the new wage rates."
little mary sunshine
I don't know anyone that will be personally affected by the Thais making more money, even if it is limited to certain skilled workers. Imagine inflation will affect the poorer Thais, but all my friends and I have prepared for our retirement and a 10-15% increase in the cost of living here in Thailand won't be noticed. Still so economical to live in LOS!! Edited August 7, 2016 by little mary sunshine

It's an absolutely *insane* amount to rapidly raise an economically sensitive input cost like the cost of labor. Never mind the morality of it. Never mind the economic necessity of it. Doing an extremely rapid, un-phased wage hike of 60% is dangerous. This will have serious effects on the Thai economy. Prepare for unemployment levels to "surprise" economists to the upside. This only appears to affect people in certain skilled jobs. It is highy unlikely that people doing the skilled jobs will be working for the current minimum wage at the moment, some of them will be earning much more than that. The people doing the unskilled work will still be paid a pittance, slightly more than before but not much.

ncc1701d
Why does she say "asks for business cooperation"? Shouldn't she be able to say "business must comply or face fines"? It makes it sound like it's at the company / business discretion.

volka
I can not find anywhere what those groups are and what the types of jobs are Funny enough there is no list of what the exact wage must be. So how do employers comply without knowing what is going on?

The area where my girlfriend lives, I believe the general population will hear this and believe the increase applies to them regardless of training, certificates or job. They can barely get enough work at B300 a day. Good luck trying to get more out of the employer.
