We went back to the  person who arranged the original planning permission and paid for the new building plans and sumitted for approval and plan permission. I can't remember how much it cost, likely much more than money demanded to make it go away. But then again we never needed to worry about future demands by future officers as happened to one of our neighbouring 'illegal' buildings when some official came round on a regular basis to demand money to 'make it go away again'.
