Bombing in Thai seaside resort town kills 1

BANGKOK (AP) — Two small bombs exploded Thursday night in Thailand's popular seaside resort town of Hua Hin, leaving at least one person dead and 20 others injured, according to Thai media.

Reports on the websites of the Thai Rath newspaper and other media said the bombs were hidden in planters on a busy street with open-front bars. The victims include Thais and foreign tourists, whose nationalities were not immediately known, according to the reports.

The fatality was described as a female street food vendor, and some reports said a second person had died.

It was not clear who was behind the attack, but the timing suggested it might be an effort to embarrass the military government that took power two years ago. Junta chief and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on Wednesday night took credit for bringing stability back toThailand after an extended period of unrest.

The incident took place on the eve of the birthday of Queen Sirikit in a town where she and King Bhumibol Adulyadej maintain a summer palace.

Prayuth's speech was to mark the success of a referendum on Sunday that approved his government's proposed new constitution that is supposed to lead to an election next year. Critics of the charter say it is undemocratic and was fashioned to keep the military in control for at least five more years even if a free election is held.

Another bombing took place earlier Thursday in the southern province of Trang, killing one person and injuring six, according to Thai press reports. It was unclear if it was related to the Hua Hin blasts.

Trang is on the fringes of Thailand's deep south, where a low-level Muslim separatist insurgency had killed more than 5,000 people since 2004. Almost all the violence has been in the three southernmost provinces, which Trang does not directly abut.

Thailand has been plagued by political violence, including several bombings, for much of the past decade.

Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted as prime minister in a 2006 military coup after demonstrations accused him of corruption, abuse of power and insulting King Bhumibol. His ouster set off sometimes bloody battles for power between his supporters and opponents, who include the military. His sister Yingluck Shinawatra, who became prime minister in 2011, was ousted in the 2014 army takeover.

Truly sad.  Let's hope some folks can take a step back and forget bashing Thais or being overly cynical and simply show a bit of compassion.  A tragic event for Thais, foreigners, and Thailand in general.  Definitely not a good trend considering the bombs in Trang and duds in Patong.

Often it's not a question of Thai bashing per se just pointing things out and don't forget LoS brings a lot down on themselves.

The Erawan Shrine wasn't terrorism according to the authorities and in under 17 hours they completed the scene of crime investigation and had the area concreted over following which the public and reporters found items of potential providential value which the BIB didn't want to know about.

I agree it's tragic and compassion for the deceased and injured is necessary and most appropriate but that must come from the authorities too without a cover up to protect vested interests.   The victims deserve the truth.

Doesn't look like an ISIS attack,  a lot of more people would of died if it was ISIS.

You base that one what?

ISIS isn't like the US military where if they have access to the full resources of the government to execute an attack.  Many "ISIS" attacks are simply people who have been radicalized and decide to take things into their own hands.

8/2016 - Machete attack:  Belgium - 2 injured

7/2016 - Church Attack:  France - 1 killed, 3 injured

7/2016 - Suicide bomber: Germany - 15 injured

7/2016 - Suicide bomber:  Saudi Arabia - 7 dead, 7 injured

These guys use what they have available.  In France and Belgium, apparently they couldn't even get ahold of guns.  In Germany and Saudi Arabia they had low kill ratios even when they had the advantage of a suicide bomber to pinpoint the attack.

I'm not celebrating any of this.  Just pointing out that your logic that an attack has to produce 50 or 100 injuries/deaths to have been perpetrated by ISIS is patently wrong.

And I don't have any reason to believe or disbelieve it was ISIS either.  But taking one datapoint, the number of injuries and deaths, and assigning responsibility is not a very good way of finding out who did it.

And people posting snarky comments and wildly speculating about things they know nothing about helps in what way?

Listen, I Thai bash with the best of 'em, but it's really kind of sad that the first thoughts some people wish to express when something like this happens is how the BiB will screw up the investigation or how there may be a link to the fact that some lady wore a dress that Thais found offensive.

For all of the things people say about Thais, how do you think this makes farangs look when we ooze bile ourselves and cannot even stop our cynicism long enough to feel bad for the victims of such a heinous act?

And so it begins....:(

Looks that way.....the timing and Location ....a particular day and Occansion .

I guess ""peace"" and ""calm "" and waiting is over there now?

As usual the evidence will be removed by incompetence .

So sad for the victims .

It's heartbreaking people are killed or injured this way.

It looks like a Thai on Thai attack and perhaps disruption to a celebration and poor world media focus .?

lets hope the real culprits are caught.

Something tells me locking up political opponents does have a consequence.

Thai media will under junta orders try and put a harmless spin on it all fearing tourism numbers falling off.

Never the truth.

I do feel sympathy and expressed it.   i wasn't being sarky but simply pointed out that the BIB and Thai officialdom have a poor track record and Erawan is a glaring example of a deliberately botched investigation because other influences were in play.

I believe the victims here deserve better than that,   don't you  ?

I don't feel safe there anymore, I have a business in Hua Hin, althought most of the time I am not there, but with this happening I am strongly considering closing down shop. Surely this will impact the tourist season now and probably for a long time. Guess it's time to move on. No save place anymore.

To happen in Hui Hin it was likely a message sent to the authorities/nationalists. Much like the shrine bomb and earlier fire at/near Central World.
