Mark Wolfe
If you have been, like me, waiting and hoping that one day the owners of the franchise would treat the subject with some seriousness and intensity, your wait is finally over. Gritty at times and lacking, thankfully, the campy adolescent humor ("I will enjoy working under you, Mr. Bond," says sultry babe), this film actually is a stand-alone among its other incarnations. Not perfect, but well done and miles from the comic-book-silly previous movies. And, as a Thai friend said to me, "There will be another one; this one didn't end…he said, "My name is Bond, James Bond right at the end!"
poorfarang
The movie was about 1 hour too long. I agree. Also, when I was there the picture screwed up on the screen. About half way throught the film It was half way off the screen. I thought the staff would notice but they didnt. I sat there for 15 mins and it never got corrected. Nobody else did anything so I left and had to go inform the staff that the picture was messed up. Pretty rediculous if you ask me
poorfarang
Also, as a poker player I found the poker scenes absolutly horrible. The ending hand was so obvious to how it was going to play out. (and dont make me get into the odds of a hand as rediculous as that playing out in real life) Pretty rediculous if you ask me

Is it worth the trip to watch? Cheers MM Absolutely! A brilliant job and thoroughly entertaining. No one I know who has seen it has anything bad to say about it. I nearly cried on two occassions - for different reasons though - one involved the remains of a wicker chair and the other when he wrote off the Aston Martin! Sometimes you have to suspend reality to enjoy this type of film and just go with the flow. If you cannot do that I doubt you would get through the first ten minutes as the chase scene on the tower cranes is unbelievable but cinematically very effective. I thought it was a great film and would go and see it again.

kayo
It is to be beared in mind that this movie is not a chronological follow on. It is a rather more "bond begins" concept, showing his beginning (albeit, set in modern times) a little like the batman movie last year. I thought it was awesomely done. It shows his roots a little bit, and the "why" of how he became so blasé (chauvanistic?) about women. The one early love (way before OHMSS' Diana) who was his first true love... Hence in later times (earlier movies) the girls are just stunning bombshells but not really human to him. this is why this girl is, although attractive, not stunning. It's one of the few he cares about. Also shows his relation with M, and how she becomes a bit of a mother figure for him. This was added by today's writers to enhance this attitude of Bond's. I think it was very clever. There are not so many gadgets and all, because this is an early bond. when approached like this, I find it makes more sense. V. very good. toptuan
The villain looked gay. Then perhaps the Mod should move this to the Gay Forum in order to solicit more positive reviews
dclaryjr
If you have been, like me, waiting and hoping that one day the owners of the franchise would treat the subject with some seriousness and intensity, your wait is finally over. I haven't seen it yet but I'm looking forward to doing so. I read all of Fleming's books before the movie franchise started. In the beginning, the screenplays closely paralleled the books but eventually there was very little in common. Heck, in The Spy Who Loved Me, Bond doesn't show up until halfway through the book and most of it takes place in a motel room. So I find your post encouraging!! calibanjr.
Humour was Missing in Action.Agree somewhat, but I'm pretty tired of semi-witty one-liners. The torture scene, however, was genius <deleted> funny. It was short on action. Again, agree somewhat, but that opening chase scene was pretty original, I thought. Short on acting. Disagree, thought Craig was good, Dench was usual good bitchy M, the girl was O.K. Very short on exotic women. Agree. The love interest looked downright boyish, bland. But it may be that this anomaly was supposed to be what allowed Bond to fall for her. The villain looked gay. And all the old Bond villains didn't? Blofeld (sound strange?) Actually, the villain was sort of compelling to me, didn't seem super-human, super-rich, just seemed a put-upon, over-extended arms dealer. The movie was about 1 hour too long. It was pretty long, maybe a half hour.
britmaveric
Not bad - better than some recent Bond cinema. This sort of gives you an idea how Bond becomes Bond. Edited November 22, 2006 by britmaveric
mafaso
Good or bad, who cares? Give me a break! It's not like we have a lot of options regarding entertainment around here. For only 120 baht you get to sit in a nice air-con comfortable seat and enjoy a distraction for 2 hours. I go see just about every movie there. It's a hel_l of a steal I think. For 20 baht less you can buy the DVD so why not pay the extra 20 and enjoy it on a big screen. Even the popcorn and soda is affordable unlike back home where 2 movie tickets, 1 popcorn and 1 soda will set you back 850 baht easy. Also, some the Thai movies are pretty good. They make some good funny and scary movies.
Simmo
I enjoyed it and it's a good "reset" of the franchise like Batman Begins was. The love story dragged on at the end though and was gag inducing.
Wolfie
I enjoyed it and it's a good "reset" of the franchise like Batman Begins was. The love story dragged on at the end though and was gag inducing. Have to agree, the 'i love you' cr@p really spoilt it for me, the rest of the film was entertaining, not the best bond film by miles but certainly a good watch! I like the new bond, i think hes more 'down to earth' and 'nitty gritty' than he predecessors. Some parts of the film were great, the chase at the beginning had me going 'ouch, oooh... wow, omg!", the car scene with the girl in the road and the spectacular crash was awesome. The Torture scene brought a tear to my eye and made me sweat! The only problem was the over extended love scene, whilst it might be relevant to "Bond's beginning" it certainly wasn't what i expected in a bond film! Overall, i'll give it an 8 out of
