Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha on March 31, 2015, takes Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, second from the left, on a canal boat trip near Government House in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — Invoking his emergency power, junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha on Thursday suspended the governor of Bangkok indefinitely without pay, citing an ongoing graft investigation against him.

Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, who’s implicated in a 39 million baht corruption scandal, previously said he would only step down if the national anti-graft agency found him guilty of the allegation.

They have to clear a space before Abhisit can become Governor. So someone else can lead the alleged Democrats without Markie losing face.

I wouldn't mind that. This might be the first time 44 has been used for something good.

So it appears the versatile section 44 isn't only for elderly flower sellers , seven year old girls, students and people in red shirts, you can be one of the lads as well.................................:coffee1:.

Obviously this stems from a personal animus felt by one all-powerful man against another, far less powerful. There are many gradations of power in Thailand, and if you upset one of the big  beasts (whatever your political stripe) - you are out!

so the junta is now removing genuinely elected figures from office.

this bodes well for the future.

sukhumbund is certainly very well connected to the old guard conservatives, messages are being sent. military over aristocracy.

More to it than that I think. The Democrats (heh) wanted Markie out because he's a loser and couldn't win an election if he offered to set his bottom on fire. The Democrats (heh) didn't want to look like losers by firing him because they want a stitch-up in their favour come election time. But Markie didn't want to go anyway and he has 'special' connections on high that nobody talks about. Bit of a lady's man on the QT is Markie by all accounts... He also wants to be Governor, and Prayuth wants someone compliant who is prepared to owe him some favours in charge of BKK.

They've been trying to get rid of Sukumbhand for months to clear the decks, because he is not compliant in the same way that Markie is (or is prepared to be for the right price). Markie still has some ambition left in him or so it seems. Not done yet.

The enabler in all this is Prem, the same guy who couldn't let Prawit be PM because Prayuth has a 'softer' face even though he's a serial cocker-up of everything he touches, whereas Prawit looks like what he is. Besides, Prayuth can wiggle his eyebrows independently and gets caught picking his nose... enviable talents one supposes, but Prawit only grunts in an oddly porcine way.

Has nobody wondered why this coup is the only one where the official warrant declaring the new PM has not been displayed? Brother Prem has had a busy couple of years. He's been a very busy boy. Been a bit of a rascal so he has.

No doubt Prem has had his fingers in the political pie for decades. It didn't take Wikileaks to figure that one out. But Prem is 90 + so that's another upcoming transition Thailand has to survive.

No doubt indeed. I can't wait. This one will be well overdue and particularly satisfying for Thais, who seem to know exactly what this guy is.

I doubt it, he's a Thai as well so he's going to be a first rate <deleted>-up, but this is Thailand, most of 'em are first-rate <deleted>-ups so you pays yer money and you takes yer choice.

Winnie

The guy is corrupt, the preliminary investigations warrant this removal. I won't shed a tear even though he is Democrat and was elected.

I really dislike corrupt people so its good he is removed.

Right, another choice of the people being sidestepped. The question remains, who can 44 Prayuth ?

I suppose we are getting elections for the vacant position pretty quickly, or is the position of Bangkok governor now also an appointed position ?

Because, of course, the General has never done anything like that himself, .... :whistling:

Perish the thought! The "PM" has always been very honest, open and forthcoming about his and his family's unusual wealth. Always!!

Just ask the junta supporters if you don't believe me.

Not before time with all the "controversies" surrounding the Bangkok Governor's office. Time to start with a clean sheet!

Are you suggesting Prayuth has not done the right thing here......this governor has been implicated in endless scandals over the years....his time has finally arrived, and I don't think this is a case of one being more powerful.....he;s being investigated for fraud!
