Venezuelan president chased by pot-banging protesters

MARGARITA: -- A video has emerged appearing to show Venezuela’s president being chased by an angry mob.

Grainy mobile phone footage purportedly showed Nicolas Maduro being jeered and pursued by dozens of pot-banging protesters on the Island of Margarita, some 40 kilometres from the mainland.

Activists say more than 30 people were briefly detained following the incident on Friday while a local lawyer has still not been released.

The Venezuelan government has not commented on the alleged confrontation, but the country’s Information Minister Luis Marcano, accusing the opposition of manipulation, published a video on Twitter showing Maduro blowing kisses and being cheered.

Maduro had apparently been on the holiday island to inspect a state housing project.

The incident follows Thursday’s mass rallies in Caracas.

The opposition say more than a million people marched in the Venezuelan capital in an effort to pressure the country’s electoral authorities into allowing a recall referendum.

Mauro appears to be a fabulously incompetent man, who is running his country into the ground. Many other countries have dealt with facing oil prices, and moved on. He seems to be incapable. He seems to be quite a clown. Good on the people for this demonstration. Clowns need to be called out!

mauro did not make this problem. chavez did when he started giving handouts instead of encouraging his people to be independent. despite being a fertile country they import 96% of their food. fine if you have the oil reserves to pay for it.

But Mauro chose to continue Chavez' socialist policies, perhaps encouraged by authority to enact laws without going through Parliament and to reduce the powers of the Minister of Finance. Venezuela's economy hasn't improved under Mauro and the people are correct to hold Mauro responsible.

they should hold the price of crude oil responsible. if it stayed the same everything would be ok now.

Aah yes the virtues of socialism. Maybe Bernie needs to go down and straighten the mess out.

I would expect a reply like this and the ensuing likes from the know-nothings that would support Trump, only some one who knows nothing would.

Venezuelans problems  are not due to their political system, but due to their economy being dependent on the price of oil. If Bernie could make the price of oil go up, he could help Venezuela, but as it is a Trump presidency and the ensuing wars he would cause would do a lot to help Venezuela's economy , than a visit from Bernie Sanders.:coffee1:

It seems to me that you are the know-nothing who would support the socialist/liberal agenda with all its failures so obvious around the world. So the fact that the socialist government created a situation where they were funding everything with oil revenues and not building an infrastructure and economy to be self supporting when the oil runs out or price decreases is who's fault?  You seem to favor the likes of a state where the government runs everything and takes care of everything.  I suggest you visit the Balkans and see what the soviet era system left after 50 or so years of socialism and a state run economy, which by the way left things in shambles.  I would put up what I know about what seems to work in the world over what you think you know, any day. Can't people have a philosophical difference on how things should work without name calling and why bring Trump into the dialogue? What the hell does he have to do with Venezuela?  You are trying to blame Trump and those who support him his path as being ignorant while you and those of your philosophical ilk are on the righteous path. That's why there can never be any dialogue with people who think that they are the righteous ones as they never see the real world.

Not having a diversified economy is not a socialist attribute, it is poor economic policy that both countries in the left and on the right have engaged in.

Some times it s poor planing and some times it is lack of options.

I thought Chavez was way over-rated.  He presented himself as the great Bolivarian hero that would liberate the continent, but I saw him as yet another Mussolini.  That country should have been in much better shape than it was at the time of his death in 2013.  He kept his support up with his Sunday speeches -- the only thing on TV while they were happening -- which included not just hours of his prattle but also a kangaroo court of people in his regime whose performance he found disappointing (these displays came off a lot like Chris Christie's performance at the GOP convention in July).  Great way to alienate your young zealots.  Having purged his gov't of anyone smarter than himself (think Thaksin and Jatuporn) the best replacement they could come up with was Maduro. The people that support him do it only out of loyalty to El Commandante (Chavez), the dead hero of the people.

Wonder what the future holds for the country.  An alliance between them and Cuba might be likely, but neither country has a pot to piss in.  But maybe in the next year the price of crude will soar and so many US tourists will flock to Cuba their economy will surpass post-Brexit UK.  (that was sarcasm)

Well. ..

Chaves was crazy for power.
But he had his ways to navigate.

But Nicholas is not only crazy he is plain stupid and has not a clue of how anything works.
It's a runaway train now.

Hugo was a painful character.
But this is much worse.
Much worse.

Let's hope it ends soon, looks like it will.

Socialists never learn.  Their motto is always "This time it's going to work"  and it never does.

this is not going to end with  mauro being over thrown. it is going to take years before they go back to growing their own food.  it may take decades.

Never mind Trump. He's busy climbing walls. Maybe instead Maduro could call Tsipras or even Jeremy Corbyn for some high class advice.
