EIT urges building owners to ensure structural integrity every year

BANGKOK, 14 September 2016 (NNT) - The Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) has encouraged building operators to conduct frequent inspections to ensure structural integrity.

EIT Secretary-General Siriwat Chaichana and Mr. Anek Siripanichkorn, director-general of the EIT's Civil Engineering Department, held a joint press conference following the collapsing of concrete awnings at Pracha Niwet Market last Thursday.

They discovered during the inspection that the awnings were made of water absorbing materials. They also claimed the three decade old-shop houses to which the concrete awnings were attached had been in poor conditions before the collapse.

The owners whose buildings were built before the Building Control Act 1979 was introduced have been advised to conduct periodic inspection to ensure the structural stability and integrity of their buildings.

More than 4,000 old buildings in Bangkok have yet to be inspected. According to the Ministry of Interior, all types of buildings are required to undergo an annual inspection and a comprehensive one every five years.
