rooster59
Video: Rider has leg amputation after late night bike smash Image: Thairath SRI RACHA:-- A horrific late night bike smash caught on CCTV left a Sri Racha man needing a leg amputation as two others including a seven year old boy were injured. The accident happened on Sukhumvit Road in Sri Racha on the turn to the local market. Chatchai Osaphasap, 51, a man who makes keys, was riding his motorcycle with seven year old Withawat Osaphajan on the back. He was going to the market area to make a key for a client locked out of his home late on Thursday night. He turned in and collided head on with another bike ridden by Nareuphol Suthiwichaiporn who could not avoid him. The accident occurred at a three way intersection notorious for accidents - a sign exhorts motorists to take care at the intersection as accidents occur there frequently. Chatchai and the seven year old were transferred to Chonburi Hospital after initial treatment in Sri Racha. Surgeons had to amputate Chatchai's left leg after he suffered massive injuries to his knee. Withawat suffered head injures and was on life support but was showing improvement Friday. Nareuphol suffered face and body njuries but was allowed to go home after treatment. OMGImInPattaya
Is that a ghost in the photo? And all this time I thought Thais were just pulling my leg (oops...poor choice of words). To cause this much damage, one or both bikes must have been going at high speed...unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done to get Thais to drive bikes more safely. richard_smith237
This is exactly why I have a dash-cam in my car.... .......and why I won't ride a bike here... Some posters always point out that they are in control 100% of the time and they can avoid an accident... I can't see how the innocent victim in this accident could have avoided the impact. From the Video its brutally obvious that the Motorcycle rider somehow didn't look at the on coming traffic. How he didn't see three on coming bikes is beyond me... but it shows the total lack of awareness of some on the roads which makes daily travel here a challenge. Whats worse - they guy who caused the accident had a 7 year old child on the back of his bike.... He thought he had the correct Amulet on, so would it be no problem to endanger people on the roads . unfortunately he picked the wrong one up that day , he had the lucky lottery Amulet on so was doomed before he started off down the road. Amazing Thailand on the roads.

balo
The rider of the bike could have been influenced by drugs or alcohol , you should be able to spot 2 incoming bikes with head lights on and just wait for them to pass. Even at night , it was good visibility so no excuses.
Xircal
11 hours ago, Pattaya28 said: What made him do a right turn into oncoming traffic? I guess he just misjudged the speed of the oncoming traffic. In this screenshot taken from the video you can see that the biker who intended to cross hadn't even entered the box before the oncoming bikes were already on top of him. I don't know, he basically just went ahead as if the junction was not there. And the guys coming straight on were going fast and not looking ahead. The standard of driving here is abysmal and stupid beyond belief.
onemorechang
There was no innocent parties here, apart from a little boy who trusted his dad. ( hope he recovers soon ) All bikers were driving with no due care and attention and speeding also not stopping at a junction, just swooping across a carriageway when there is on coming vehicles ( foolish ) idiots the lot of them. but this is totally normal behavior here. Canuk23
One thing I learned here is that Thai's don't like to wait even a few seconds it's madness !!! no one gives a chance to no one, its all me first !!! no conscience at all, no courtesy concept as soon as they are driving, except my girlfriend who is a very good driver patient, cautious. Painting with a bit of a broad brush there aren't you? There are good and bad drivers the world over...I don't find driving in Thailand particularly harrowing...and find many drivers are courteous. There are plenty of bad ones too and I'm happy to let them careen on down the road ahead of me.

KonaRain
I read here on TV about Phuket Govnr. making prosthetic limbs and stuff So I called the reporter and told about 3D printed limbs, and hands to attach to bikes for those who need one..They said on BBC that it costs 5 dollars, not 15,000normally. $50 is okay..Sorry for the guy..Be careful! nausea
Well that's a life changer. I know having had problems with a leg myself, using crutches and all that. And Thailand isn't the most disability friendly country.
lonewolf99
3D printer... can print plastic legs but can it print brains..................? The first rule for a Thai at a juntion is "Do not look in any direction, make no effort to check for other moving vehicles". Second rule. "Make sure you always pull out in front of vehicles driven by a foreigner, as you could be in for big bucks compensation." I see this day in, day out and the foreigner is me. But I am watcing for you Somchai.......I'm looking right at you with the brakes covered.....
