BANGKOK: -- Former director of Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) Phirapong Israpakdi was on Tuesday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after the Criminal Court found him guilty of misusing his position in a way which benefited a private sector at the cost of the city bus agency.

The case dated back to April 4, 1996 when the city bus agency under the directorship of Mr Phirapong signed a contract with Narind Land and House Company to rent the latter’s Pet Ngarm garage and a parking lot on a 17-rai plot of land for five years.

Under the terms of the contract, BMTA was charged a rental fee of 1,022,400 baht per month for the first three years, 1,124,640 baht/month for the 4th and 5th year.

Who's looking into abuse of government funds and land for all the military bases. I bet they could find a lot of uses of base and military land that benefits certain figures on those bases.

This BMTA story is just one in a nation of abuse. It's a big one but size doesn't determine corruption. I'd like to see investigations of all government institutions. There is so much cronyism and nepotism going on in terms of who gets to rent properties at certain locations. They certainly can find much much more abuse across the kingdom. I hope they open their eyes.

Not going to happen, so long as your backside points to the ground!
