Officials from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources on Wednesday inspect the property owned by CP executive Jaran Chiaravanont in Trat province.

TRAT — Maritime officials said a residence belonging to an executive at the nation’s largest corporate conglomerate sits illegally on nearly 60 rai (9.6 hectares) of protected forest land.

The Marine and Coastal Resources Department made the determination Wednesday after sending a task force to assess the costal home of Jaran Chiaravanont, a board member of Charoen Pokphand Group, in Trat province.

Yet another example of why there needs to be one rule for the rich and another for the poor in Thailand!

It is one thing when needy family members abuse their conditions of use of Government land (that had been transferred to an ancestor for agricultural purposes under Sor Por Kor Title), and a vastly different situation when so-called "Pillars of Thai Society" have no qualms about criminally manipulating Sor Por Kor for their own personal gain, and even when caught out, continue to escape prosecution or even being made to pay costs for restoration of the land they abuse!

Currently, it seems the Thai legal system applies the letter of the law in both cases, when it would be far more appropriate for the spirit of the law to apply in the first situation, and the full force of the law to be applied in the latter case.

Highlighting this absurdity is the recent case of former deputy police commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Chalee Pekanan who simply refused to return land that the Agricultural Land Reform Office had been trying to reclaim since 2009 (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/942580-alro-told-to-demolish-a-police-general’s-luxury-house-located-on-sor-por-kor-land/?page=1)!

This dispute went all the way to the Supreme Court, who in April 2015 ruled that Pekanan had indeed occupied the land illegally. It also ordered him to dismantle all buildings and other infrastructure, but (as noted in another ThaiVisa article back in July this year) this order was defied and ignored (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/932317-large-plot-of-land-in-khao-yai-owned-by-former-senior-police-officer-seized/

So, now to the Chiaravanonts. It's going to be interesting to see how Thailand's farcical law deals with this family, who like so many other influential people, have a proven track record of criminal abuse and flagrant disregard of the legal system (http://www.reuters.com/article/cp-all-chairman-insidertrading-idUSL3N17O2ZW).

Let's wait and see.

Although this is usually a futile practice when applied to equal treatment before the law for the wealthy here...

This sums up the rich in Thailand. all that money but stealing land."

You would think that a family with this kind of wealth would act smarter!

They have also been involved in insider trading "thought they played with monopoly money" was their comment about this... and accusation slavery on their chicken farms lately. Very nice people indeed.

When the powerful, influential and wealthy personalities got prosecuted, charged and jailed, it is more than often due to the faction they alligned. The power on top dictates who to suppress and really no equal treatment. This is hierarchical Thailand after all.

Actually, worse for the Kingdom is all the money, the capital, they take out of the nation while paying relatively little in taxes.  The CP group is the worst offender.
