I am at present in the UK, I noticed at the airport in the UK a box near the check in desk, which your cabin bag must fit in to.

Mine looks slightly bigger, I used it flying from Bangkok with no problem, could I have a problem with

the same cabin bag checking in for my flight back to Thailand?

IM possible to tell with this insufficient info. If you had taken a look slightly further on, you might have noted that each airline has its own such thingies, but the essentiial part is DO they use it and if yes, how stringent. In general one can say, that the lower the general price-the stricter they will be. (think RYAN air and the like).

And why only say ''looks''-if the thingy stands there-why not simply try it out?

NOte that beside size also WEIGHT-limits may apply.

It is in the airline bisnis a common known fact/complaint that these rules can also be different for big/small planes-thus giving pax trouble when they need to use a smaller local plane for the last mile to their homebase (f.e. you fly a 747 from BKK to say FRA and then change into a narrow Embraer to Paderborn-or whatever. Besides that-it may also depend on how fully loaded the plane is-if just half of seats are taken, rules may be relaxed and tightened if its 100% full.

There is no weight limit, I asked at the desk, I was told that as long as the cabin bag fit's

inside the thingy. I was at the airport on other business when I noticed it. Surely BA, the airline, cannot refuse to allow it on the plane for the return journey back to Bangkok, when it was allowed on the flight from Bangkok to the UK. I never noticed the thingy at Swampy, although that is not to say it wasn't there.

Look on the airlines website under baggage. They will tell you the maximum size and weight. If you are unsure take a tape measure and measure your bag. Different airlines have different limits so don't assume they are all the same.

It's a rough guide and in all my flying years, the only time I had the restriction rigorously enforced was in transit through CDG on Air France. Regardless of the fact that Air France had allowed me to board in Houston with it as hand baggage, they insisted that it had to be checked for my onward flight. It wasn't oversize but the twerp hovering at the transit desk suggested it was 'too heavy'. I argued that I would be the one placing it in the overhead. Apart from LCC's, has anyone ever seen any cabin attendants actually help place bags in the overhead?

I reckon the OP should be alright on the night but make sure that any valuables can be quickly transferred to a smaller, more acceptable bag if they insist and it has to be checked.

BA's general-policy on hand-luggage is slightly unusual, they allow one carry-on (in Economy) which can (in theory) be up to 23 kgs, plus a laptop-bag/handbag.

But some ticket-classes allow less, or indeed more. I believe that I saw that they were now sometimes doing LCC-style zero-hold-luggage on some European flights ?

Most other airlines only allow 6-7 kgs, for the main carry-on, IME.

Its got to fit reasonably in the overhead bin but from experience mine never gets even looked at because rarely am I above 12-15kg on checked bag. I'm assuming there is some discretion
