One has to be a very, very, very stupid person to play the Thai lottery. One has a better chance of winning at the casino playing the slots, that's how poor the pay out ratio is.

The Government Lottery Office ACT B.E.2517

Chapter 3; Finance, accounting and auditing

SECTION 22. The proceeds received by the Government Lottery Office from the sale of government lottery tickets shall be allocated as follows:

(1) sixty percent as prizes;

(2) not less than twenty-eight percent as State revenue;
(3) not exceeding twelve percent as expenditure on administration inclusive of the expense in respect of the sale of government lottery tickets.

As I anticipate that someone will say, wow, 60% of participants win something. Nope. Not at all. It means that only a very, very small number of players will actually win a part of a  relatively small pot of money. I'll make it even simpler to comprehend. Of the estimated 20 million  Thai   nationals who play in any given year, only a  few hundred participants win an amount that is somewhat large.  Exceptionally poor odds, and exceptionally poor moral ethics to run a lottery  in this manner.

I tend to agree.   I occasionally play the lottery, but haven't for a long time.   There was a nice old lady near where I worked and when I would gas up the car she would come by and I would buy a ticket.

Of the probably hundred or so people that I know who consistently play the lottery, there are almost no winners and those that do win a very small amount.

Geriatric kid says

How very condescending of you.

I would agree with the rest of your post so why start it in such a way very very very condescending.

Now to answer the op in a less condescending way. Yes I play the lottery both times. I buy 3 tickets each time so 480bht a month. Roughly £10 a month. Have I won yes on several occasions I have been lucky nothing massive but a win is a win when I was back in birth country I played twice a week normal lottery £4 in total and euro millions on a Friday £2  so  £6 A WEEK £24 a month won a lot less than I have here in Thailand.

     Not only are major prizes pathetic compared to other Countries, should you win one you are taxed on top of that. Complete waste of time and money, much more chance of winning the (illegal) local lottery. Every village has one.

A lot of people playing.   Not many winning.

Rather sounds like life itself. The prize levels are low and the winnings are taxable on top of the low payout. I have heard different rumors where the excess goes. I play the weekly lottery in my home country via my daughter. Much larger prices price about the same. I buy only one ticket that is all that is needed to win. One in reality stands a better chance dodging elephants falling from the skies.

I sometimes buy a Thai lottery ticket, just for fun.

I used to play lottery at my home country, while it was still allowed for us who don't live in the country.

One round cost was less than 1 euro / week. The idea was to setup continuous play with really no impact to my expenses. Never checking the results.. and maybe one day to see that my bank account had few millions of euros. Most likely not, but one can always dream :)

I believe the poster that said Farang are not allowed to win. If so then tell me the name of the farang that won 6 million baht. Even if they let him cash in a winning ticket they wouldn't let the falang take the money out of the country except 10,000 baht per trip out. I might be wrong but as soon as a Falang wins there will be some 'bridge-domino' law from decades ago that'll be used against them.

Why play foreigners are not allowed to claim prizes

Jeez Louise,  are you misinformed, I have won three large prizes, and a whole slew of smaller prizes in past 20 years, one for 4 million(when it was 20 baht for a $$), another for 320,000 recent years, and just last month 100,000...................got my money in a cashiers check and taken to bank everytime - you pay  a small Tax on the winnings and (think I paid a 1000 bath on hundred thousand)used to be  time you could take the tikets to the bank and cash them in, SCB wouldn't do it.   You can't win if you don't play, and I play big

Never played the lottery in my home country.  Why start here?

As said, they're just a tax on poor people.

I do find it quaint and amusing how Thai people gather around the scene of an accident, like when they pull a car up out of the moat, to get a glimpse of the license plate numbers.  I've been told they're doing that to select "lucky numbers" for the lottery.  Is that true?  Are those numbers lucky in the sense that they're going to win, or unlucky as in you won't want to play those numbers?

You can't lose if you don't play, but I prefer to play a little as it brings the little lady so much joy. Lets face it these poor people would rather live in a straw shack and have a good time gambling a bit than upgrade to a rusty tin roof. They seem much happier than the debt ridden westerners back home.

The tax is 2 - 4%.

Yes , I know a farang who won some years ago 4 Mio Bath. He got the money without problems. Ok, he could have a problem, if he wants to transfer this money outside of the country.

My first win: When I came together with my wife, she went with me to an astrologe (17 years ago). He told me three lucky numbers too. And sure, by order of my wife I had to buy 3 lottery bills with ths numbers. I won 20.000 Baht. I got the money (after tax 19.400) without problems.

The only problem: My wife does not belief until today, that it was chance.

For eighty baht and a chance to win 6 million bt,  I will occasionally buy a ticket. I have won 2 numbers probably 10 x out of 100 tickets and 3 numbers twice. Still probably up a little. I buy the same last 2 number every time.

The way I look at it, playing the lottery is a good way of helping charity. I usually buy one ticket per month, sometimes 2 ( one for each draw). It's a little fairer now the tickets are all 80baht each. In the past, different vendors would charge between 100-110 baht for a pair.

I'm amused to see the lottery come up as a topic as in July I matched 2 numbers and 'won' something for the first time ever. I was quite interested to see how it worked: I went back to the lady I'd bought the ticket from, she directed me to another guy with a stall outside the local gold shop. He was friendly when I handed over my ticket and helped confirm I'd won. I gave 40baht 'tax' and he gave me 2,000. At least I know what happens now, I always thought there might be issues if foreigners won.

You have to be poor to play the lottery?

Lotteries in every country are just another tax on the poor. When a lottery in the states eclipses 300-400 million I would buy one ticket! As they say you never know.

Tax on the poor??? So you wait for it to be x amount then buy a ticket. So you leach of the poor then
