Be aware of the cute hilltribe kids at Wat Doi Suthep

I read a story from an American news organization about cute hilltribe kids at Wat Doi Suthep steeling things like watches from tourist as they posed for photos with them.  The story goes on to state that the parents of the children were present and may be forcing their kids into this type of behavior.  Does anyone know if this is true?
