PM Prayut calls for more tourism development to help tackle inequality

BANGKOK, 28 September 2016 (NNT) - The Prime Minister has called for development of the tourism industry in a manner that can help tackle the problem of inequality in the country.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday chaired the official opening of World Tourism Day and delivered a special lecture on Thailand’s tourism in a global context.

The PM stated that Thailand is honored to host the event which comes along at an opportune time after the country’s tourism industry has evolved over a long period, particularly in terms of logistics connectivity.

Nevertheless, Gen. Prayut noted that the industry must continue to develop while allowing all involved equal access and promoting connectivity, both locally and internationally.

The Premier also urged good management policies, especially in the areas of safety, service standards and good hosting.

In addition, Gen. Prayut suggested that Thailand needs to adopt technology in tourism promotion and further improve the quality of the transportation system, service standards, choices of accommodation, and culinary experiences as well as to train more personnel to help accommodate more tourist arrivals and conserve Thailand’s natural and archaeological heritage.

They could start by eliminating dual prices everywhere...example; Koh Samet - Thai citizen 40฿ / Foreigner 200฿

Just a suggestion...but everybody (including myself) knows that it will not change any time soon.

So does equality mean dual pricing is finished or is it just words for the international community?

the problem of inequality in the country.

Three simple steps to resolve:

1) Focus on real education in the unequal areas ( not just the 12 steps of how to kowtow to the military)

2) Focus on real investment in the unequal areas, as opposed to more train lines in BKK and uneconomic high speed lines

3) the elite-serving military steps down, returns to the barracks, and only comes out in the event of a foreign threat

Nice to hear the PM talk about inequality and he should certainly know what he's talking about as people like him are on the right side of it.

Perfect example currently involving his brother and nephew.

So fine words have been spoken by Thailand's leader  - and that is enough. All done and dusted.  In the Thai official mind, saying or writing a thing is absolutely the equivalent of doing that thing. It's a kind of sympathetic magic: if you speak words (spells), then they will come true. No more to be done.

Never mind that the reality is the glaring opposite of the fine-sounding words you have spoken - and will remain so for all foreseeable time to come!

Dear PM, a good place to start will be with the grave and unjust inequality

treatments giving to many foreigners residing in the country who all the want

is to be happy, work, have fun and enjoy what Thailand has to offer without

being treated like outcasts.....

Tourism and more tourism.......doesn't anyone in Thailand think about industry, manufacturing, trade and the like?

Thailand will be the digital hub soon, it will be manufactured on the countryside in huge factories. Planting rice is about same-same as planting a chip on a board, soldering a circuit is about same-same as watering a plant....they all can do it and will get high salaries for it.

Meanwhile he is sending g his goons to the homes of farangs in chiangmai who are detaining them and demanding full private details.  Normal families, husbands wives and children.  They are not Jews they are rounding up and checking details.

Simply priceless, "Prayut... delivered a special lecture..."!

Reminded me of my old authoritarian headmaster!

As for tourism, any meddling they do to "improve" it is sure to backfire.

Very disturbing.

You know this for sure? What is the source of your information?

Edit: just found the source. In the Chiangmai forum. Interesting, very concerned about this apparent turn of events.

It won't.  He does not want to dismantle any of the nauseating monopolies that the elite enjoy.   He wants to pawn it off on tourism.  Investment is needed, and no foreigner with an ounce of sense is going to do that.  Malaysia, Cambodia and Burma are good bets for tourism investment, Thailand no.

I hope you didn't mean to imply that if they were Jews, that that would be okay, then??

I really, really hope that was a mistake ....

"Improving the quality of transportation system" should include such items as enforcing traffic laws, real punishment for violations regardless of social rank,  training how to drive, putting down more than 1" for road surfaces, prison terms for those who transport publi while under the influence.... the ball is in YOUR court, dear leader

They could make more questionnaires.  And put them on a website that doesn't work.

Foreigners feel much safer when they can report all their personal details to a military government.

I guess you find all the woes in Thailand are to blame on the military?

And not on the political situation before the takeover, and not on the economic situation in the world, and not on the growing inequality between rich and not so rich everywhere in the world, and so on, and so on?

That said, I agree with you about the railway ideas, but wait, who started that nonsense?

High speed rail, standard gauge, dual systems in one country......

Although it must be said that this government is quite good in delaying tactics vs the strategic wishes of China.

About the function of the military, there are many countries in the world where the military have more and other functions as in some western countries.

And serving the elite?

Which elite do you serve?

The rich?

Or the rich?

Thereby not forgetting the tiny monthly contribution into the economy by every expat of an average of 50,000 baht.

Was this before or after the emancipation proclamation?

If another flood like 2011 hits BKK you can forget most of the things you have mentioned !

You're doing fine General...uh...Prime Minister.  Everyone knows that quality tourists like to vacation in countries with military rule and censorship.  The kind of places where visitors need to be carefully instructed on the forbidden topics, the ones that must not be discussed or they might result in long prison sentences.

Maybe that's the reason for all the Chinese tourists; they're used to that sort of thing.

Typical cart before the horse syndrome...instead of increasing demand to justify expansion and create a sellers' market, the little general wants to add resources and thin out existing revenue distribution by making it a buyers' market.

It doesn't. Once again the Toads' toady said nothing much more than to 'urge' good management policies, like he could have urged people sweeping stairs to start at the top and work down.

The fact any of this pretend soldier government can put their tourist scamming industry together with inequality just goes to show how little they are qualified to run a country, and also how much they rely on others (tourists are foreigners) who they then disrespect.

We are now barely an elite tongue wag away from foreigners held to blame for Thais being poor. How could one put it past them, after everything and the way it's going?

The message from the number 1 jabbering mouth: "You fools bring us your money, then go home."

No, you fools teach yourselves English, it'll give you something to do whilst the tourists deservedly go elsewhere.
