I have an IPad 1(I think) 4 yrs old, sound has now stopped working, it's very slow and keeps showing low memory warning, went to Apple shop to try and increase memory answer "can't do" so is IPad no good now?

it's probably an iPad2, or 3

The no-sound is a well known problem with these units (we have last month encountered the same problem)

in Australia, we have been quoted AU$295.  I showed the quote, so that one can compare relatively to the cost of a new unit in toto.

The Reset, factory Reset etc procedures are all availaible on the Net

You can use a lot of your spare time, going through the Internet-suggested methods of playing with the speaker defaults, and volume adjustments; which will appear to respond on the screen - but the sound will still not be there...

You can also, very carefully with a fine brush, clean the Interface slot at the bottom - a very common solution

Most likely, if yours is the common problem: your earphones work okay still...

We are cheaping it, instead of fixing or replacing - by buying some little satellite bluetooth speakers (from eBay)

In the week leading up to the sound stopping:

- we encountered the sound becoming rather raspy/rough, in that all clarity faded

- to becoming as rough as sandpaper

Yes ear plugs work fine and yes the sound started to sound odd!
