BANGKOK, 30 September 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak urged the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to expedite the construction of a dual-track railway.

The deputy premier said that he had instructed the SRT to expedite the project to build seven routes of dual-track railways in the provinces in a combined distance of 995 kilometers.

SRT Governor Wutthichart Kallayanamit confirmed that he will submit the second phase of the project to the cabinet for approval and will hold an auction to find a contractor by the end of this year.

The second phase of the dual-track railway project will be built in another seven routes in a combined distance of 1,493 kilometers in 2017.

He said he had approved an amendment to the Terms of Reference to allow both Thai and foreign construction firms to bid for the project.

Is that the Chinese medium-speed freight-railway, or SRT's long-running (and under-funded) own efforts to dual more of their meter-gauge routes, or the current administration's own very-short high-speed demonstration-line ?

SRT's long-running (and under-funded) own efforts to dual more of their meter-gauge routes .

That would make sense, but then again.........................................

Why is the General Prayut not enforcing that SRT  leaders to pay back the billions they owe the public for decades of mismanagement and neglect?

REINSTATE THE BAR SERVICE !!!

An essential requirement to upgrade the SRT is to reinstate the bar service.  The SRT used to be my preferred way to travel.

Thailand is not a Moslem country, and there is no excuse for depriving passengers of this relaxing facility.

The idiot responsible for cancelling the service should be fired. It was a knee jerk reaction to the rape & murder committed by SRT staff.

The Personnel Manager should also be fired for negligence.

Much more important than any of the confusing high speed rail projects that continue to be sporadically and possibly unreliably bandied about.  (YES! What ever "high speed" actually  means in Thailand?)   (Edit) Not sure how this ended up here.   I was replying to ratcatcher, (or thought I was), in his reply to Ricardo.   This new Thai Visa continues to surprise  and confuse me, rather like quotes from Thai politicians on Railway projects.

What "SRT leaders"?

By the time there's an elected government, Prayut will have committed probably about 60% of future budgets to pay for infrastructure projects for the next 20 years. Won't leave much funding for populist programs like expanded health care, social security,  low income housing, etc. that would gain the popular support of the electorate .......

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
