BANGKOK: -- The cabinet on Tuesday agreed to increase the compensation for damage to rice crops by flood from 1,000 baht to 3,000 baht per each household.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha also said that the government was considering how to help owners of farmland which was used as water retention area to absorb excess water discharged from dams by the Royal Irrigation Department.

He asked members of the public to understand the government that it cannot afford to help every flood victim even if the government wants to help. He also noted that most of the flooded farmland are located outside the protection of flood walls and, hence, flooded every now and then during the monsoon season.

"...The prime minister went on saying that, in the near future, the government would regulate the farming sector to ensure there is enough water for farmers for cultivation. Farmers, for instance, should not start cultivation at the same time throughout the country because, in such a case, there may not be enough water for all of them...".

Well, the junta and its cronies have already used their power to effectively control Thai people's desire for democracy and free speech, so why not extend this power to Nature !!!

However, they need to be reminded that (according to C. S. Lewis - the author of The Chronicles of Narnia), “What we call Man's power over Nature turns out to be a power exercised by some men over other men with Nature as its instrument” !!!

Telling us they are going to "regulate" what farmers have been doing for generations is the kind of rhetoric that is only going to widen the political rift that could still tear the country apart.

okay maybe that's enough to put fuel in the Vigo   four or five times but what happens after that?default_blink.png

Many of them will be subsistence farmers, who grow rice for their families to eat. Their cash income probably comes from casual labouring and working on other farms.
If they lose their crops then B3000 isn't going to feed them for a year...

Good thing then that there are multiple crops a year 2-3 (especially in that area). But I agree 3.000 bt is a pittance.. they should get a amount per rai they own. Should be around equal of the margin people have after selling rice.

Wow! What a generous subsidy. All of 3,000 Thai baht

And it's 1,000 baht - 3,000 baht per household. Not sure who gets the lower amount

But if it has been activated:

In June 2016 the cabinet endorsed a plan to provide insurance for agricultural produce for the 2016/2017 production year which would cover about 25 million rai of rice farmland. Under the plan, an insurance premium of 100 baht will be paid for each rai of farm land. However, farmres pay nothing for the premium as it would be subsidized with 40 baht from BACC and 60 baht from the government farmers.

In return farmers will be compensated 1,111 baht/rai if the crops are ravaged by flood or heavy rains, drought, storm or typhoon, cold weather or frost, hailstorm and fire.

Not necessarily on the amount of rai that they own, but it should also include the land that is rented out to farmers but NOT pay the landowner who has already received the rent for the land.

Yes I agree.. something like that. The amount of money should be a lot higher.. these guys are taking losses because the government want to retain water to help others (good plan) But then at least give them a real compensation of the lost income.

This differs from farmers taking risk themselves.. this is intentional flooding to help others. If farmers are flooded because they just farm in a bad place.. their loss. But this is totally different.

" Cannot afford to help every flood victim . .."

Ye Gods! I should think not - have you seen the price of submarines, Ukrainian armoured personnel carriers, high speed trains, helicopters and VIP configured airliners recently, to mention just a few of the vitally necessary projects they have to  pay for.
