COLOMBO: -- A controversial Thai costume won an award for best national costume at a beauty pageant held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The costume "Thotsaphak Naree Sri Siam" was worn by contestant Arm-Arthitaya Khunalaphat at the Miss Intercontinental 2016 event in the Sri Lankan capital, reported Manager Online.

The outfit features the ten faced headdress related to the demon Thotsakan who is a central character in the Thai Ramakien story that came from the Indian Ramayana epic.

The controversy came about after questions about the suitability of having the face of Thotsakan as part of the waist area of the costume.
