Aussies behaving badly: number of Australians arrested and hospitalised overseas soars

Michael Koziol

The number of Australians arrested and hospitalised overseas skyrocketed last financial year, prompting a warning from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop about reckless behaviour and the growing workload placed on Australian consular officials.

A total of 1551 Australians were arrested in foreign countries in 2015-16, an increase of 23 per cent, with drugs, fraud and assault the most common offences. There were 391 Australians assisted in overseas jails, 61 of which were in mainland China.

A further 1667 Australians landed themselves in overseas hospitals, an increase of 15 per cent.

The biggest hospitalisation hot-spots were:

  • Thailand (176 incidents)
  • Indonesia (153)
  • US (122)
  • New Caledonia (75)
  • Vietnam (72)

Ms Bishop said the figures made for "interesting reading". She was particularly concerned about a lack of knowledge about local laws and customs, noting that Australian consular action was "significantly constrained" once people were subject to a foreign legal system.

A couple of hundred years ago they invited them in. Now, they're exporting them. Guess it's a case of taking the basic model and improving it - it's called value added. Aussie galahs! You're champions. You won't win on Saturday, though.

Hmmm, China getting some of their own medicine...  :whistling:   "Can't we just all get along" and stay home?  (Except for me, of course?)

" In total, consular officials dealt with 15,740 cases arising from 10.2 million international departures, or about 43 a day. The Bangkok embassy in Thailand remained Australia's busiest consular post, with 836 cases, followed by the US, Indonesia, Italy and the Philippines."

Phew, i was starting to get depressed at the 1,551figure. 15,740 sounds much more impressive, you can't keep a good yobbo down.  Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

So, Australian Foreign Minister Bishop said the figures made for “interesting reading” !!!

Really ???

Using arrivals data provided by TAT (http://www.tourism.go.th/home/listcontent/11/221/276), a total of 782,176 Australians visited Thailand during the period July 2015-June 2016.

So, if (as reported) 176 of them ended up in Thai hospitals, this equates to 1 in 4,444 (not bad statistics really, considering the risks many of them take on motor scooters).

As for ending up in Thai jails, well the reported 107 equates to 1 for every 7,310 visitors !!!

Hardly "interesting" reading - even with total arrests (world-wide) amounting to a 23% increase (??? compared to when ???), it's a bit over the top to see this as a "... growing workload placed on Australian consular officials...".

Interestingly though, as reported in the Traveller article, compared to Thailand, more than twice as many Aussie miscreants fell foul of the US justice system during the period.

...spot on article. I had no idea the Auzzie Embassies were getting overloaded with work from their tribe. I think it is something that is obvious living in Pattaya. About 7 years ago---I used to be friends with about 8-10 Auzzies. Then I noticed something: Their toast ALWAYS falls butter-side-up. In misunderstandings---never their fault. In 2009, I did a Vientiane Visa run and traveled on Louang Prabang. Handwritten signs all over Laos "Auzzie Man Go AWAY."

I have since trimmed my ranks of Auzzie acquaintances. D'oh---do most people remember that Australia was used a penal colony by the British Empire? The fruit doesn't fall from the tree. Google up bad Auzzie behaviour in Bali. They are the New Ugly Americans.

Well, thanks for shifting the attention away from us, if just for a moment....

A little forethought and respect would be appreciated please. My great, great, great grandmother was one of the first 300 white women in Australia on the first fleet. To feed her family she stole 5 shillings [50 cents] of goods. For that she was transported. This was the case for nearly all convicts. Any person who committed a real crime was executed.

Go g. g. g. granny, you are my hero.

Isnt it great that as soon as we leave home we are virtually disowned by our govt?

But if you look at the figures closely I think we are being racially profiled in the USA. Out ranks Thailand.

What a nerve we Aussie travelers have to expect our govt to give us help if in distress.

Nope once you have paid the big dollars for a passport you are out on your own.

I am glad I have never needed their help because I would not want to ruin the champagne trails afternoon tennis match at the Australia club where those Aussie Diplomats and Govt officials use tax payers money to live a high life and look down on any unfortunate Aussie who may need a helping hand.

True Australian Mateship at its best.

We all know the purpose of an embassy is just to spy on other countries and be used as a travel agent for the Ministers like Ms Bishop.

All I can say is Thank God I am not an Ozzie. Absolutely disgusting.

IQ & common sense while overseas test for all of them getting a passport.

As pointed out by several replies to this topic Julie Bishop must be illiterate because the figures she quoted were dead wrong and made the Aussies look worse than they were. But you so called expats were soon to jump in and rubbish the Aussies. I was born in the UK and have lived in Aussie and New Zealand so I know first hand who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Any Aussie that misbehaves is most likely of mid eastern heritage, the Aussies falling foul of the law in China would most likely be of Chinese origin and the Aussies getting into trouble in the USA would be the dregs of Australia. You <deleted> should learn not to believe everything you read.

Complete absence of facts in this outburst - you've obviously not spent any time in S.Bali over the last 5 - 10 years. Mostly youngsters having a good time I know, but I'd be surprised if quite a proportion of them do go off the rails at some time during their stay.

She has nothing better to read, her leader is too busy trying to screw as much as he can from everyone, especially the pensioners.

At the same time these same clowns in government want to give themselves a massive pension pay out

Spoken like a true lawyer. I do not need facts when I witness things first hand. My advice to you is to never learn to speak Thai and never marry a Thai who can speak good English or you will be found out.

Nobody has yet mentioned "Bogans". As an Anglo-Canadian, I believe the term is equivalent to the honorific,  "Chav" given to Englishmen.

Perhaps if there is a member on this forum who is also a member of either subculture, they can clarify this information.

I.m not sure if Americans & Canadians have yet developed such a similar creature

Good point.

As for your advice on learning Thai / marrying a Thai, I don't have a scooby what you're talking about.

Back to topic. One when considers how small Bali is, I guess the Aus. consulates there are pretty busy.

As for us Brits, we know how to behave when abroad - Irn Bru all the way.

The function of any embassy of any country in any country is to facilitate trade and big companies.

Period.

Aiding countrymen abroad is not interesting.

At all.

Your government got your tax, and that is it.

Any more interest is about tax, and nothing else.

If you dare to go abroad and disappear from the radar, well, end of any interest in you.
