Military denies boat owners seeking free parking

All boats using public parking spaces must be moved by the end of October, per order of Maj. Gen. Yutachai Tiernthong, commander of the 14th Military Circle. Any remaining craft will be confiscated.

PATTAYA:-- After clearing out unused speedboats, the military formally banned any boat operator from trailering their watercraft on land at Bali Hai Pier and told them to pay for their own parking.

Maj. Gen. Yutachai Tiernthong, commander of the 14th Military Circle, said Oct. 13 that any remaining craft must be removed by the end of October. Those that aren’t will be confiscated, he said.

Yutachai said that not only was the illegal parking considered encroachment on public land, it contributes to traffic congestion and parking shortages.

Former city councilman Sanit Boonmachai, who heads the Tour Boat Association of Pattaya, said vendors have discussed the issue and are willing to cooperate. However, the government or military must organize another area for them to idle their watercraft, he maintained.

Sanit also doubted there was available space to house the estimated 300 boats that had been clogging up streets around Bali Hai. He said moving them to a remote area would be a hardship on vendors.

He suggested that some of the boats be left alone, but that they could be removed as necessary during major festivals or events.

The army was having none of it.

Some as probably 299 of them in his mind.

I noticed that some of the boat owners have no occupied a piece of land in the small soi where Aksorn school Pattaya is located.

I don't know if they rent it,as it is a piece of land that laying bare for decades and recently had some food stalls set up on them, but at least they have put on signs for parking fees.

How about I start to occupy your house, Mr Sanit Boonmachai, and then demand that you arrange other free accommodation for me before I vacate? The nerve of these morons takes my breath away. All vehicles should be impounded and the owners issued with severe fines.

Most probably a remote piece of land can be found on the "dark side".

Let's say that 150-200 boats are actually in use.......they'll have to go along Thepprasit in the morning and all the way back in the evening clogging up Thepprasit itself, the junctions with Thapraya Road, Sukhumvit Road and probably Khao Talo as well.........within a few days after being removed from Bali Hai the Pattaya community/commuters will cry 'hell and fire' and things will get back to normal.

yep moving them about will be a logistical pain.

by chance i was down that way when the military visit was going on, about 35/40 strong inc 1 getting a lot of salutes.

clearly a big cheese who had a motorcy escort when he left.

none of the boat trailers have any brakes other than the vehicle doing the towing.

none of them have any lights/indicators either.

the boat guys held their own meeting after the official visit and they did not look happy.

Since there will be a 50% drop in tourist visitors, this should roughly commensurate with 50% less people wishing to parasail or island hop so straight off there's 150 Bali Hai boats that can be safely  and permanently stored as many kilometers from the beach as possible.

...or scuttled.
