BANGKOK: -- Tourism and sports minister Kobkarn Wattanavarangkul said Wednesday that the tourism life of the nation goes on following the passing of His Majesty the late King two weeks ago.

Kobkarn said that she had met with 34 ambassadors and ten Thai business leaders on Monday to affirm the government's plans to press on with tourism in the kingdom, reports tnamcot.

Under the banner "Life Goes On"  she said that it was effectively business as usual with sporting  and cultural events continuing with just some adaptations to make them appropriate in the circumstances.

The welcome for foreign tourists would be the usual warm one, she said.

Some events that would continue were listed s follows:

Air Race One Pre-Event, 19-20 November; Princess's Cup equestrian event 25 - 27 November; Jetski King's Cup 3-4 December; Phuket King's Cup Regatta 3-10 December; Chiang Mai Marathon 18 December and the Bangkok Marathon on February 5th next year.

She also called on Thais to join in with celebrating the 70 years of the reign of the departed monarch with the "70 routes" campaign set up earlier in the year.

She confirmed there was free entry to historical sites and museums throughout Thailand until the end of January 2017.

when she says " the welcome for foreign tourist would be the usually warm one " , does that include the foreigners who work and pay taxes here for many years , or are they going to continue to make life for them more and more complicated ? Has somebody ever heard of a country where you need to report every 90 days when you got a one year , multiple entry visa plus a valid work permit and a fixed address ?

Yep. That's the truth.

Yes the govt can press on with tourism as much as they want but that doesn't mean the actual tourists are coming or will come until what's happening here is much clearer since so much can happen on a whim starting with the PM all the way down to local officials.

Ministry to promote local tourism to places in 70 routes travelled by the late beloved King

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is now encouraging the private and the public sectors to hold activities at places in 70 routes where the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej had travelled to promote local tourism.

The minister Mrs Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said all these places where the late King had travelled in the country could best serve as places of learning for all Thais and students in their outdoor studies.

This would help boost domestic tourism and local economies, she said.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand would be tasked with the job to draw up tourism.

She said local tourism associations had expressed interest in promoting meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions in these routes in their regions, she said.

They had asked the ministry for information about the 70 routes taken by the late King, she said.

Shameless marketing .

He was King of Thailand and travelled extensively throughout his realm and now this is seen as a way to boost tourism and spending thinly disguised as a chance to study.

You beat me to it.

How will she explain the drop in tourist numbers that is ahead ? We went through Swampy on the 17th October and back again on the 25th (around noon to 14h30) and both times the airport was emptier than normal. The restaurant on the lower level where all the Chinese ate was nearly empty. Visibly the Chinese numbers are substabtialy down, maybe the zero dollar clapdown.

Did she uncancel the Pattaya International Firework Festival and the New Year's Eve Beach Fireworks. I must have missed that.

Wouldn't want thousands coming to Pattaya under false pretenses would we ?

If anything they should do their month of mourning and then have a celebration on a massive scale to honor the memory of HRM. They could literally have special events and festivities across the entire country that could draw people to come see them.

I am not sure why they feel making people stew in this and be miserable the only form of respectable observance? Yes, there is a period to grieve but also there is a time to celebrate his memory.

Why not bring a little happiness to the people and start that with for example, the greatest Loi Kratong anybody has ever seen in their lifetime?

You can say it is a period of mourning and that is fine but it is a bit inappropriate for the Minister to be counting tourist dollars if this is the case. If being solemn is truly the only acceptable way of being respectful they should also accept that foregoing some tourist dollars is a part of this. She is trying to have it both ways.

Oh yea, tourism is just booming. That's why even many of the expats in Nong Khai have gone to Lao and you won't find any tourists there. Oh wait there were tourists there, the border was packed with Thais coming back from Lao after 3 days. And, Makro was full of Lao people, yea that's it, they are tourists, right. The only people I saw in Udon yesterday were the same people I've always seen. I just must have missed those 100's of new tourists downtown. All my fault of course for not seeing them.

Of course not! The "warm welcome " is for TOURISTS, as stated above!

If you live in Thailand (which you obviously do), then you ain't a tourist, and this is about Kobkarn and how she wants to treat the millions of tourists pouring into The Kingdom.

If you've lived here for years, you don't need a visa, just go to work, pay your taxes and do your annual extension and let them know you are still alive every 90 days.  Easy peasy.

Things are very quiet around Bangkok: Centralworld has never been so empty ( except when it was on fire). The restaurants along the skywalk are deserted and the food court is much less busy than usual ( both locals and tourists).

I can think of many countries that will not allow 90% of Thai's to even visit, I'm sure yours is one of them.

AS I said on another thread, she is the minister of sort and tourism and is not anything to do with immigration rules.  That is the province of the Minister of Police.  How much influence does she have over him when he is getting all his info from his own people who may not be seeing things the same as she does?

That doesn't sound so bad. I heard of a country where everytime a foreign resident goes on holiday, their spouse must report to immigration immediately upon spouse return. And if a foreign tourist  moves from the place on the tm card, they must report in to immigration immediately. Or face large fines. Did anyone else hear of a country like that? ???

The various ambassadors have absolutely no influence on the people back home and how they plan thier individual holidays.  The people outside thailand are free and the ambassadors after being spoken to by TAT cant tell them to come to thailand.

No, where is that?

In Thailand when a resident goes on holiday and leaves the country, upon their return , they are required to fill in their address on an arrival card TM8 half of which is stapled in their passport. When a foreign tourist moves around on holiday, it is incumbent upon the hotel, guesthouse to report their presence. If a resident has been staying at the same address as registered with immigration, not necessary to report. Only if address changed.
