That's a bit harsh doggy. Sihanoukville has plenty of dead beats but most expats in Phnom Penh are fine. Because Cambodia does not really have a sex industry older expats in Phnom Penh tend to be very sociable and there are not many of them.

Cambodia is not cheap compared to Thailand or Vietnam but visas and drivers licenses are easily available and the people are cool. It must more freedom than most countries in the world.

Since you just stay at home, work out and watch movies... Vietnam because you'll get better value for money quality apartments, a much higher salary with the part time teaching, better internet.

Nice apartments are in short supply in Cambodia and more expensive than Thailand.

Cambodia is more about trying to live as cheaply as possible, lower quality apartment for cheap, lower quality prostitution for cheap, cheap booze/cigarettes and hard drugs of all kinds easily accessible, very cheap visas, and casinos.

I have stayed in Thailand many times for a few months at a time, I visited the Philippines and I am still there 2yrs now. Coppywriter is correct the Philippines is better in many ways to Thailand once you get away from Manila. Visa's are easy nothing like the stupid system in Thailand and lots speak English. The only thing wrong in my view is they drive on the right side of the roads which is the wrong side for me.

Being an American, the right side of the road IS the correct side...  555

Vietnam hands down over Cambodia. Cleaner, cheaper, seems less corrupt. Cambodia uses the USD

so while prices are stable in USD terms US dollars are becoming considerably more expensive.

Try a few months in both and I think you will choose Vietnam. I made two trips there last year and

really loved it.

Thailand has a much better infrastructure but the Philippines actually wants the foreigner and they make it easier to live and work long term.

Most of the expart traffic goes from PI to TH rather then the other way 'round...make of it what you will.

If someone wants to be close enough to travel to Thailand by car, Cambodia is the best choice.

Actually who cares anything else but a good Internet and cheap western food ? Then Cambodia also seems the best choice.

Vietnam is more developed but too far from Thailand except if you like flying.

...So now I consider myself one of life's "loners". What that means to me is a person who can get along without seeking out the company of others. A person who enjoys his own company. I would by far rather be a person such as this then being of the type who cannot stick their own company, who almost always needs the company of others, who hates going home to an empty room, who has to sit for hours in pubs or coffee shops in the hope of meeting someone to talk to.

                                  Just my tuppence worth.

I've always been rather like that.  When I was very young, my Mom stopped punishing me by making me stand in a corner, facing the wall.  Said it didn't do any good and I would just play with the dust bunnies or whatever, to her embarrassment.  I enjoyed it, I guess.  Although I do like being on the periphery of people and conversations.  More so now that I'm older.  But conversation has to be like tennis, lobbing the ball back and forth. It's not a game to be won, it's a pastime.  Like posting here.

When I went to Thailand 40 years ago, I would walk around my small town if I got bored in the evening.  With my limited Thai, I would talk to a shopkeeper for a minute, then move on down the street and have about the same conversation with the next person.  Over and over again. In a small town, they soon get to know your face.  Thereafter, all you have to do is lift you head, say "uuh" and smile as you go by.  Tease little kids and watch them run away giggling.

Can't say anything much about Cambodia or Vietnam, as I have not visited.  I have one Cambodian buddy here in the U.S. and he is the nicest guy one could hope to know.  I'd trust him with my life.

As for Vietnam, my wife's clan is from there, still some left including her older sister.  Last week she went there to visit for the first time ever, for two weeks.  Today I was on Facebook video chat with them.  Mostly grinning and bowing and a few words of English.  One nephew is a mechanical engineer and quite a nice boy.  There was an old man and the cutest 8 year old girl.  And a crappy connection.  But all having a good time.

OK, Dotpoom, "what about yourself" 55555

The only ones who tend to take it personally are those who have their feelings hurt. Mention alcoholics for example and every alcoholic in Thailand will be all over you. Likely no different than losers. In my opinion birds of a feather.

ha, thats an interesting take on cambodia.  theres def truth to it.. but imo, at least in siem reap. the apts are better quality for about the same price as thai.  in bkk, cosmetically they are good but they are thin walls and not well built imo.  put up fast and look contemporary but you can hear the person breathing next door.  just an opinion based on my experiences
