BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha clarified on Wednesday that when he said he would try to make rice farmers live a better life in the next five years, he didn’t mean he would stay on for the next five years.

What he meant was that his government had set a five-year plan to help improve the livelihood of the rice farmers, he said, adding that he was optimistic that the plan could be achieved “if we solve the problem at its root cause, middle cause and end cause.”

The prime minister said he had seen many recommendations in the media, but would like the media to check what he had said before and what the government had done and where the problem was.

He went on saying that he used to ask the media to try to create better understanding among the farmers towards the government so that they would cooperate with the government.

The five year plan for farmers doesn't mean he'll stay on for the next five years.

H's probably quite correct, I think his plans go much further than only five years, after all he's got his twenty year corruption eradication scheme to see completed !

it's boring to here this guy lie day after day after day, ... and so many times in a single article...

- not stay on for another 5 years

- has a plan

- will solve the problem

- as long as the media helps propagandize him to the farmers,

... wait, that last one is true... :whistling:

I still believe he'll bail out as soon as he is offered a spot on the Privy Council !!!

Similar remuneration; a job for life; and, you can remain aloof from all the petty politics, questionable policies, and difficult times ahead.

You may have a point and I have some thoughts on the new Privy Council but can't air them here.

However the question is how does he see the role of a royal advisor against that of being The Man !

Another 5 year plan for farmers. They had a lot of those in the Soviet Union and China, and while mostly every other part of the population's live improved, the farmers are still shit poor.

Basically what the government is saying to the farmers with these plans is "Just grow our food and shut up about how hard you have it. We can always give your land to some other poor bloke who will appreciate it, or turn it into a resort for our own pleasure and profit."

I believe him. After a wave of suicides, the surviving farmers will be well off. Similar to Forest Gump and his shrimping boat business, after the hurricane wiped out the competition.

Not exactly promising the world is he?

Considering that they get turned over at every juncture and are amongst the hardest worked and poorest paid, giving them a lollipop on their birthday would greatly improve their lives

Does the government speak a language other than Thai ?   Why is he always begging the media for understanding ?   The government must be either completely out of touch or they speak a different dialect.

Why is it the media's responsibility that farmers understand and cooperate with the government's plan?

It's not but apparently Prayut isn't brave enough to face farmers as to the changes he plans in their lives and culture to carry out his agricultural reforms over the next 5-10 years. Nor does he want during that process any opposition that might result from media reporting that doesn't follow Prayut's propoganda.

This view of the media as an extension of the government is the same as Prayut had regarding the Malay-Thai insurgency. That it was the media's negative reporting on Prayut's inadequate negotiations that caused talks to stall. The Thai media should support Prayut's national agenda without question.

They took power in the name of "reform before elections". As it was just a slogan and they had no idea of what reform to implement, they haven't achieved anything. Now they still don't have any idea of it,  so they set 5 years/20 years targets hoping they will ultimately find some overtime. :)

Ah shucks you can coax me? Mirror mirror on the wall who would make the best prime minister of them all? You my dear Prayuth you by far Oh look there goes a shooting star. Looking at his picture again the man does seem to show true humility. Would an X-ray machine show his "True Colors" Inject and follow the dye and see where the blockages are.

Promises, vows and now insistence. We heard it all and none fulfilled. When all these failed, blame the media and politicians. Same old same old.

yes,  we have heard it all before, ... he's already had 2.5 years to make their lives better, ... and that has been a total waste.

I just read something from the paper today with Prayuth suggesting that people should meet with him on a 'bi-annual basis' over another issue. He sure does seem to have a slip of the tongue or use the wrong words when speaking about the future. There's also a story about pay being raised to 200,000 - 300,000 baht a month for people in his position and the rest in the cabinet and parliament. Maybe he will try to stick around to help those farmers.

He is using the same policies for farmers.populism at its very best. He's just following Thaksin Shinawatra steps.

No he isn't.

What he (apparently) said was

quote from the OP  "Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha clarified on Wednesday that when he said he would try to make rice farmers live a better life in the next five years, he didn’t mean he would stay on for the next five years".

Thaksin promised at the 2011 election that EVERYBODY would be rich in 6 months.

Thaksin was partly right and partly wrong.

Some people were richer though it longer than 6 months but far more people were poorer and deeper in debt.

How many years did Thaksin and all his tribe have?

Are the farmers better off now than in 2000?

yawn, ...  but thaksin...

but he did actually make life better for farmers... and for a lot of people in thailand ... a lot children are alive in thailand because of his policy on healthcare for example. And that change was immediate.

Thaksin was  a crook, but this guy is a crook and a clown.

Bla bla bla... without actually stating how EXACTLY this is going to be achieved, it's all just meaningless drivel.
