BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International has decided to cancel some flights and to adjust many other flight schedules to northern provinces during Loy Krathong festival between November 14-16 for fear of safety risk posed by sky lanterns or small hot-air balloons.

THAI’s president for safety affairs and aviation standard, Cpt Pratthana Pattanasiri, said Thursday that sky lanterns released by Loy Krathong celebrants might pose safety risk to flights and, hence, it was necessary to adjust flights and to cancel some flights during the period in order to maintain high safety standard.

Flights to be cancelled include TG120 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and TG 121 from Chiang Mai to Bangkok during November 14-15.

Flight schedules to be adjusted include TG 116 on November 13 will leave Bangkok at 3.20 am instead of 5.20 pm; flight TG 117 on November 13 will leave Chiang Mai at 5.20 pm instead of 7.20 pm; TG 120 on November 13 will leave Bangkok at 3.50 pm instead of 6.40 pm; TG 121 on November 13 will leave Chiang Mai at 5.50 pm instead of 8.50 pm; TG103 on November 14 will leave Chiang Mai at 9.55 am instead of 10.05am; TG 105 on November 14 will leave Chiang Mai at 12.05 pm instead of 10.40 am; TG 116 on November 14-15 will leave Bangkok at 3.50 pm instead of 5.20 pm; TG 117 on November 14-15 will leave Chiang Mai at 5.50 pm instead of 7.20 pm.

THAI also decided to increase flights for travelling between Bangkok and Chiang Mai and vice versa.

This time last year they were ready to ban the lanterns in Chiang Mai but, suddenly, a 'rocket scientist' has come up with an alternative. One that was pretty obvious at the outset.  Wonders will never cease.

The only way to deal with the problem is to let those affected deal with it.

If I would be the COO of TG (or for that fact any other airline operating into Chiang Mai) I would cancel ALL flights in and out during that period. Believe me; lots of people would go over the moon for closing the airport for such reasons and the powers-to-be in Chiang Mai would have to get out of their posh offices and get the regulation enforced.

Too harsh? Remember all those ten thousands of tourists who were bused up to Chiang Mai during the closure of Bangkok's airports during the riots? Three out of four swore never to come back and they kept their promise. It will never happen again - the closure of airports and same can be enforced in Chiang Mai. But it would take decisions.
