Agriculture Ministry to push for large-scale rice farming

BANGKOK:-- The Ministry of Agriculture is pushing large-scale rice farming, insisting that the model will help cut production costs, improving rice quality and ensuring higher earnings for farmers.

Agriculture Minister Chatchai Sarikalya on Friday visited a pilot project of large-scale rice farming and learning centre to increase rice productivity in Tambon Dermbang, Dermbang Nangbuat district of Suphan Buri province.

The large-scale rice farming involves three players, the government represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, the farmers and the private sector, with all the parties taking part, starting from production planning, joint management, setting the quality of rice and marketing.

Chatchai's on the right path but the solution is a multi-factor one to profitable farming. In the past Thai governments have approached agricultural farming piecemeal and not changed the dynamics of the industry. Hopefully, the pilot will identify all the necessary factors necessary for success but some might require political considerations not currently acceptable to the Prayut government.

How does this fit in with the "sufficiency" philosophy?  Just curious.

Some people will have sufficient wealth to be in the top 100 in the world's richest list*, and others will have sufficient rice to keep their families just above the poverty line.

Don't think too much, as people often say here.

Sufficiency Economy is a method of development based on moderation, prudence, and social immunity, one that uses knowledge and virtue as guidelines in living.

Seems to have little to do with application of scientific and economic principles than to human behavior-based principles. The latter might serve a domestic agricultural industry wherein a family can sustain its own needs but falls short of sustaining a national economy that contributes to national GDP growth. On a broader scale the sufficiency principle seems more oriented towards a fuedal system that better serves an oligarchy.
