As with so many things that are done half ass, accidents are dime a dozen and

life is cheap as most workers are poor foreign workers from neighboring countries

and a small sum as a compensation will iron out all wrong doing....

Unfortunately I agree.

RIP and condolences to families and friends. Hope those who are injured recover quickly.

Who is the contractor?

A tower crane is usually mounted onto the pile foundation of the building. In the photo, they are just excavating to expose the piles. So, what was supporting that crane?

This is obviously a "free standing" tower crane. It would have been interesting to have inspected it prior to anyone touching it. A couple of things in the photo look strange. RIP to the unfortunate workers. Condolences to their families.

Excavation causes soil under load to move. Tower cranes are usually installed after completion of foundation construction.

Mobile cranes on temporary steel braced working platform is the norm during foundation construction.

Question is, what was it standing on?

It is standing on its own concrete base.

You can see it clearly, and that the tower base [bent over at right angles to the right.is still attached to the concrete base .

My guess is that it was either still being assembled and an error was made in the assembly order and became unbalanced or was lifting something way out of its limits.

Time may tell.

But I'm sure there would have been a Safety First sign on the gate so that's enough, surely. Falang fuss too mutt.

But the crane itself is expensive, one would think that alone would cause the managers to use it properly.

I know lives of workers of low consideration here, just a small payoff to family, but those cranes cost some serious money. One might think contractors would exercise some care when it comes to expensive tools even if not give a fig about the workers. I sometimes have similar thoughts regarding bus crashes and such.... you may say insurance will pay for equipment, but at least insurance companies might exercise some due diligence over companies they insure. Well, TIT

Having a concrete base is not enough when the base is sitting on soft Bangkok clay, and excavation works are all around it. The base can simply tilt when the crane is at its tip load, much like a bottle opener...

Dead Workers Probably At Fault For Fatal Crane Failure, Cop Says

By Teeranai Charuvastra, Staff Reporter -

Rescue workers respond to the scene of a crane collapse on Tuesday in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — A police investigator said Wednesday that the workers killed in a crane collapse might have been responsible for their own demise.

Five people died Tuesday afternoon at a construction site at Shrewsbury International School on Rama IX Road when the 14-meter crane toppled during the final stages of installation. Four Thais and one Cambodian worker were killed.

Your theory is indeed possible, but improbable.. i will stand by my thoughts, which on looking now at latest report tend to confirm what i said.

There are hundreds of similar crane/construction jobs in BKK  in the soft clay...but there are not hundreds of these incidents.

Good guess it seems.

Yes, more of a "calculated guess" but i have been involved in civil construction most of my life.

Seen all manner of mayhem, mishaps, and close calls over the years [in the westernworld, i might add]

Your suggestion about inspections is reasonable. Except inspections by government regulators cost money (fees and envelopes) and therein lies the problem.

“If it was wrongly assembled, it was the dead workers who were installing it,” Suebpong said. “They were installing the crane, then the accident happened.”

However, he stressed that police have yet to ascertain the cause of the accident.

When will the police here learn that it's best to keep your mouth shut until you are certain what the heck is going on first?  This guy is suddenly an engineer and can make a valid conclusion based on what experience or evidence?  It seems that they like to act like big shots when a camera is in their face and can't resist trying to sound like an expert whose job it is to share their great knowledge with the "dimwitted public".

Just say "it's a tragedy, and we are working hard to determine the cause and we will keep you posted" and then go do your job.

RIP to the workers, who will unfortunately be quickly forgotten (and, most likely blamed, as el Capitano has already laid the groundwork)

The fault lies with the dead. Case closed. Work resumes.
