Passport For Half Thai Child 5 Years Old

My Thai GF and I last week were able to get a Thai Passport for her 5 year old daughter. The process was quite simple. She took the child's birth certificate and two family members to the Banglamung ID office and for 300 baht, recieved a document basically stating that she has sole custody of the child. The following day we made a trip to Bangkok and in 2 days, had a passport. The total bill was 1300 baht and done in less than a week.

She had previously asked a lawyer to assist her in this matter and he wanted 50,000 baht up front.

A lawyer is completely unnecessary. Couldn't have been easier.

Thats great but I am a bt confused, the mother is thai, the child is thai & they are living in thailand. Why would it have been difficult to get the child a thai passport and why would a lawyer be needed to abtain something that all thai citizens are entitled to have??

The father is a Canadian whom she has lost contact with. The rules for a Thai passport require both parents or a letter a letter of consent from the absent parent.

The lawyer claimed she needed the court to grant her sole custodian status.
