Seed Supplier Quality

Just wondering how some would rate the seed suppliers like East/West, Chia Tai, Metro,Golden Mountain, AAA and any others. Been having some problems with seed Germintation. While some have been fine, others have been poor to total dud's. Yes I have been looking at the expiry dates.

Hello All, I've had very good luck with C-T and Known You Seed Co.

The X date, but is the store HOT, do the seed packs get hit by sun,

did the the truck that brought the seeds to the store sit in the sun

making it's deliveries, or poor viability of the seed crop.

You aren't over watering or using a potting mix with cow or chicken

poop in it?

Try to germinate some seed in a moist paper towel. Put it in a ziplock

bag on top of the frig, covered, no light. start checking after 3-4 days

and see if you have any luck. Check every few days for any sprouts.

If nothing sprouts, try another store.

Yes hard to control what happens to the seed from the supplier till purchase. So you have no idea if they have been sun baked during delivery. The stores have been fine. Not over watering or using potting mix with chicken/cow poop.

Guess can only think that the packs of seed got over heated.

I keep all my seeds/leftovers in the fridge. You will notice that some shops sell seeds in a sealed tin, so obviously this is a problem the Thais know about.
As far as possible I collect seeds myself, but I have twice now had problems with maize that wouldn't germinate.

I had similar problems with seeds purchased here in Thailand. Then, about 6 months ago, I started buying my seeds online from international suppliers. Since then, almost 100% germination success!  It seems to me that how the seeds are stored here is the main problem.

PM me if you're interested in the name and address of the UK based website.

  • 4 weeks later...

So out of interest. Still have been fighting to get seeds to germinate. 3 packs later I got Ice Berg Lettuce to germinate. Been trying to get Eryngium foetidum (Thai Coriander) to grow. First seeds bought in Pattaya, second batch was bought in Sukhothai. Both "AAA" seed company. Turns out they both had the same lot# and both packs will not germinate. Working on the 3rd and last batch from a different seed company. Some other seed packs of different vegtables have been just fine while some are hit and miss.

Maybe better to order direct from seed company then taking chances with display rack seeds?

Hello All, lettuce seed don't keep a long time, some are "primed"

to aid in germination and that adds to there short shelf life. A lot

of lettuce seed is imported and repackage which don't show original

origin/country.  Also primed is not to be confused with pelleted seed

which are easier to handle and use mechanized seeders.

Iceberg lettuce is not a good to grow in hot areas of LOS, the green

and red oaks and cos's do better.

Try buying seed in a sealed foil pack or for large amounts in a sealed

can for bulk.
