Just watched PG961 from BKK arrive around 16:00hrs and abort twice in heavy rain.

Watching on Flightradar24 app and it looks like it's returning to BKK. Flight time over 2 hours and still not landed.

Bummer for those tourists arriving for their hols.

Shall be happy flight returned and they'll arrive a bit late, instead of not arriving at all...

Have a good friend here right now, he's happy his flight got cancelled so he could stay longer ?

I have my Anglo-German niece and her partner arriving Samui by direct flight from KL next Monday (16th). Have been advising them not to panic as weather radar pictures show the current storm system passing/passed further north and the apparently equally dire system over Indonesia (the source of current storms seems to have been from that neck of the woods) looking static.

Has there been any history in the last 10-20 years of such dire storms continuing over a long period.

I remember a similar system cutting the north off from Bangkok 4 or 5 years ago in early Feb - it destroyed our Phuket holiday but once it had blown out over the course of a week it did not reappear.

Two holiday-wrecking storms in high season in 5 years. Perhaps we should be redefining high season for Samui/Phuket and further south, when advising friends and family! I would certainly advise December or March in preference to Jan/Feb, based on my own limited knowledge. But then I don't know whether either of those months have been similarly afflicted.

[I live in Lower Isaan by the way - the weather here in Jan/Feb is glorious, just a small matter of no seaside within 500km!]

How are things now Samuians?

Hope all is well

Thanks...:wai:

Samui got a lot of media attention during the early January rain – wonder why in comparising to so little attention during the December monsoon-downpour, which was as much, if not more – maybe because it was during so-called "peak-season"..?

Samui is normally almost back to normal "business" a day or two after rain stops. However, now we enjoy our usual high-season sunshine with calm sea, and no wind, perfect for beachfront candlilight dinners; or beach parties, if one is into that – send instead hope for all those people that got really hit hard, over on the mainland...

WindGuru is calling for 60mm on Tuesday morning alone- even if you split the difference it's a lot of rain.

The forecast has improved a bit since I posted this, but as of Monday morning the site is still calling for ~100mm over Tuesday and Wednesday- I may have to head south tomorrow, and I hope their overestimating the rainfall...

It's raining again :shock1:.... I think we can  expect a few more days of this again!

Please help others by posting any problem areas due to flooding etc.

Not too bad in the Lamai area that I've seen. Rain has been pretty constant but not heavy enough for it to cause an issue. They (whoever they are) also took the time to mostly clear out the debris from the big drain at the rear... at the bottom of the hills at the back.
