I would like to get my next one year extension [marriage] into a new passport. My renewal date for the visa extension is 31 May. My next 90 day report is scheduled for 17 March. My current US passport expires 17 Nov.. My plan is to make that 90 day report using the current passport then immediately apply for a passport renewal [which will mean a trip to Bangkok] so I'll have the new passport back before I need to apply for the one year extension. Alternatively I might be able to avoid the journey to Bangkok and apply for the new passport when the US Consular staff visits Khon Kaen in February [like this year but I can't find dates scheduled yet so I may end cutting it too close].

Questions: does my original 90 day non-O need to be transferred to the new passport? What is the procedure?

Thanks

  • No. They will make a note in the new passport about the original visa. They never transfer visas, only permits to stay (stamps).
  • If you get a new passport before the current extension expires you can go to your local office and they will transfer the extension stamp to the new passport.

I don't know how long it takes you to get a new US passport.

But if you find out that there will be no outreach in February then you still should have enough time to go to Bangkok and get the new passport before May 31?

Depending on service times at the US consulate you might make it as a one day trip by plane from Khon Kaen.

My consulate (not US) made appointments in the afternoon.

If there isn't an Outreach visit in KKC before you need to extend, look for one in Udon.

Your 90 day report date is not important since you will have your old passport to od it with. The US embassy does not keep your old passport unless you choose to have new one sent to you by EMS.

The average time to get a new passport is about 10 days.

Just checked and they still don't have the 2017 outreach schedule posted yet but would expect them to post it by the end of the month. ( https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/consular-outreach/ ).

If they do the outreach in KK mid February you would have time to get you passport before your 90 day day report date.

You could have the stamps transferred to your new passport when you do your 90 day report.

I just got a new US passport.  Applied at the Embassy and it was ready for pick-up in 10 days.

They give you a letter to take to immigration explaining that you have been given a new passport

by the Embassy.  It includes the number from your old passport.   This is to avoid any confusion.
