Island View: Unchecked road rage in Phuket

PHUKET: -- As far as road safety in Phuket goes, authorities always highlight ‘speeding’ and ‘helmetless riding’ as the major causes of the appalling number of 'accidents' and deaths on the road. However, a relatively overlooked area – in my opinion – is road rage.

One recent incident involved a 21-year-old Thai man who threw a large rock at a passing car, causing the driver to crash into a nearby electricity pole, injuring him as well as his wife and child. Police later tracked the man down and called him in for questioning. He 'explained' that the driver had cut him off first and that he wasn’t aware the man’s wife and child were in the car with him. After apologizing and paying a nominal fine, he was sent on his way, quite possibly, given his history, to do more of the same.

Another incident involving a Thai TV 'celebrity' who publicly beat up and humiliated a motorcycle rider for scratching his brand new car, generated plenty of debate last month. Videos captured by bystanders showed the celebrity dragging the man off his motorbike, repeatedly striking and intimidating him, and finally forcing him to apologize not to him, but to his mini-cooper, before letting him go.

In other words, When are the police going to do their jobs properly?, part 555.

Never .... unless there is a lot of baht for their own pocket ...

Exactly.  Most of the problems are caused by the failure of police to do their jobs properly and enforce road rules.

Most of the problems maybe, but this is about road rage. What should the police do to prevent a driver from throwing a stone at another car?

Give the <deleted> a 20 year prison time as an example and then every other <deleted> the same afterwards ,eventually they'll get the message

well there is no money in it for them isnt ?...so why bother ...

Thailand needs a new government and also needs to build lots of new prisons to accommodate more prisoners when the new ruling starts.

Prisons that have special facilities for their wives to spend the night with them once a month if they behave well. You need to look after them well to get them to listen.

Anyway, everything needs to change and start right from Zero.

I heard Thais are only becoming adults at the age of 40.

So childhood is sort of a long term - you need special Childhood psychologists to come and look at their problems.

The biggest problem is that the Thais will be asking "Is there really a problem?" See what I mean? They don't see no problem and that in itself is the biggest problem of all.

Q: What does a Thai highway patrol car with lights flashing and siren blaring mean?
A: Get out of the way, VIPs being escorted.

Sure, like death penalty prevents murders.

Sounds like Pol Pot's Kampuchea..........except for the conjugal visits.

If it don't stop them it keeps them out the way for long time and anyone put to death as never committed another crime

Helmetless riding does not cause accidents! It allows more severe injury and higher risk of death as a Result of an accident.

Sure, but thanks to the new "quote" button of this forum, you missed the original point which was prevention, not punishment.

The best prevention is the harsh punishments after the crime is committed.

It could develop into "Pol Pot's Kampuchea " style system if you are not careful. The conjugal visits must be implemented otherwise they all become gays and HIV  spread like wild fire.

On reflection, until today I still wonder why that Pol pot tortured and murdered all those innocent farmers, his own people not Vietnamese or Thais.

Honestly Thailand needs  to "Overhaul" the whole kingdom. Overhaul a term use by car mechanic meaning to examine thoroughly everything and make sure they all in working condition.

Road  rage  happens  all  over  the  world.   Murder  also

happens  all over  the  world.  In  Saudi  Arabia  the  murderers

lose  their  heads,  like it  used  to  be  in  France.  and  in  Saudi

Arabia  it  has  been  proven  that  the  headless  murderers  have

stopped  murdering  people.

Justice..

Geezer

Righto.....got it.

Conjugal visits on. Be careful so as not to re-create Pol Pot's Kampuchea.

Should be a breeze......
