Army Denies Buying Web Security Cracking Devices

BANGKOK — Hacktivists posted online Tuesday documents they say contradict army denials it has purchased decryption devices that would allow access to encrypted computer traffic.

 

As cyber battles sparked by the passage of the new Computer Crime Act continue, online activist group Citizens Against Single Gateway on Monday posted screenshots purportedly obtained from an army procurement database. Listed among purchases were items used to crack the standard security protocols people use to access web servers securely.

Other countries might not have a single gateway, but they have tight controls over what gets in and out but using legal instruments on the ISP companies.

Even with a single gateway you cannot stop information getting in and out. 

 

However with these hollow boxes that I have with a usb connector this will solve every problem Thailand has with the internet - 100,000b each and you need at least 900 of them.

well, my VPN company had to close their servers in Russia because they do not keep logs of your connections to their servers, something the Russian government now requires. So there is nothing for the government to look at if they want to try and trace you.

 

Can Thailand make it illegal to use a VPN?

Do they even know what a VPN is?

 

Obviously not a good idea but when has that ever stopped them?

 

I never understood why they need a single gateway.

The NSA in the USA installed a entire floor at both ATT buildings on the west and east coasts and picked off everything right at the source.

 

Of course the NSA employs the best computer scientist in the world and gives them unlimited funds. 

 

And remember, governments like the USA don't want other governments to be able to crack the encryption that everybody thinks is bullet proof but that they monitor 24/7.

 

and lets look at the Thai hackers that just got arrested. Lets say for a moment that the Thai government did locate the hackers by monitoring packets at some place in the "network".

How did they do it? They just got lucky?

 

the Thai Army cyber command must have this ability.

 

and of course the kid hackers were not very good at covering their tracks. very easy to do with a little research.

 

anyway all of this is at least 10 to 20 years old. just like the computers in use all over Thailand.

BANGKOK: -- DEPUTY Premier and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan and Army chief Chalermchai Sittisart yesterday rejected claims the army had bought Internet decryption tools and threatened to pursue legal action against the accuser.

 

“The information provided in the [Facebook fanpage that opposes the single gateway] has been doctored,” the Army chief Chalermchai said. 

 

“It can be observed that it is a list of tool supplies for Army engineers and the Secure Sockets Layer [SSL] decryptors comes last on the list. We don’t mix tool supplies with communication tools,” he said, advising people to use their discretion when assessing the report.

I feel like since the press is no longer free to investigate and report the truth, they try to point people in the right direction using the "(big shot) denies (thing that is most likely true)" template.

Suppose no one knows what a private key is? Providing the private key is kept private and you choose a large cipher then ssl encrypted traffic is not crackable. Well without a hugh amount of processing power.

 

Openvpn is based on a certificate authority cert and then a pub/priv key pair. Mostly openvpn used these days although cisco vpn still quite popular.

 

But why does Thailand need this gateway?
