That's the thing, there are some stupid drivers on the road, in Thailand and elsewhere.  But I would suggest that they make up a small minority.  I drive every single day and it would be disingenuous of me to say that all or even most other drivers are clueless or think they own the road.  I can honestly say that I don't have a problem with most Thai drivers.  The drivers that annoy me the most are the slow and meek drivers, traits which are not confined to Thais.

Yes, you drive every day, but do you ever ride a motorbike? I do long road trips regularly here, and IMO, the biggest majority of Thai drivers, and motorbike riders have very little road sense at all, and also, a low mentality. The road statistics say it all, there is no getting away from it.

I ride motos in the north and love it, i dont have any issues with other riders or drivers.

The main thing that bothers me is the polished surface/aggregate on many roads, not so great for traction, ive had my shoe slip when putting it down at intersections

Do you think it makes a difference what day you drive in thailand , every day is dangerous .

i agree the driving most be a lot  Bada on those days , but most days in thailand are that bad .

Yes you make a good point, every day is dangerous on the road.

But this time of the year sees increased traffic and alcohol consumption, so I guess in my own mind I'm minimising the risk.

You're right, I don't ride a motorbike.  And I've pointed this out as to the reason for the high fatality rates, the large number of motorbikes sharing the roads with a large number of cars.  In contrast, the US has relatively few motorcycle riders...yet, road fatalities are still 30,000+, year after year.

Thailand has 1/5 the population of the USA but an equal number of road fatalities.

For the fourth time, Thailand's high traffic fatalities rate can be partially explained by the large number of motorcycles sharing the roads with a large number of cars/vans/buses/trucks.  If you eliminate motorcycle fatalities, the overall rate is reduced by like 75%.
