By Rebecca Joseph National Online Journalist

KOH PHANGAN: -- A Canadian man drowned on New Year’s Eve at Haad Rin beach in Thailand, according to reports.

Global Affairs confirmed to Global News that a Canadian died, but isn’t releasing any other information citing privacy concerns.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian who passed away in Thailand. Canadian officials have reached out to the family and are providing consular assistance during this difficult time,” spokesperson Austin Jean said in an email.

I witnessed when the a British tourist was shor by accident in Haad Rin, Dec 31st 2013.

Never going there for New Years again

Was this drowning related to the stampede caused by the fireworks accident? I think we will never know.

Two people pulled from the sea. The Canadian and one other who was taken to hospital in critical condition. My understanding is that this was separate from the fireworks and that these two had gone swimming, at night, probably with alcoholic their systems, when TMD have a 4 metre swell notice in place.

See the report from Samui today on the expat rescue to get an idea what the sea would have been like.

RIP...when i was young, i thought I had 9 lives. now i know it was 8 chances and 1 life. its always a terrible loss for a family to lose a son or daughter, so young.
