BANGKOK, 18 January 2017 (NNT) – The cabinet opened the green light to a master plan to promote reading and create a learning society in a five-years time.

The cabinet endorsed the plan for the creation of the learning society from 2017 until 2021 as proposed by the Ministry of Culture.

The master plan is aimed to tackle what was considered a cultural crisis and to promote the popularity of reading among the people of all ages by implementing guidelines and models from South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Ministry of Culture aims to increase the average quality reading time per person to 90 minutes per day, compared to an average of 66 minutes at present and to create an environment which will encourage reading at anytime and anywhere.

For that matter, a policy-level committee will be established and consist of members from both public and private sectors.

Since I've been here I've seen Thais reading time increase exponentially: so much time reading Facebook, Line and other social media.

That's not reading...but imagining. They need graphics, photos and video to stimulate their imaginations.

The government will have to include a plan for the kids to put away their smart phones before any progress will be made.

More comic books.

Yes, what is the quality of the material ?  A little in the way of comic books is fine, but things like critical thinking (never going to happen) and philosophy (does Thailand have philosophers like China ?) are more important.

I don't believe 66 minutes a day if you take students out of it....

go to airport train station coffee  shop doctor office library ( do they have them?) etc and observe how many Thais are reading a book a magazine something not their phone?

Sounds good on paper and in the news. Should resonate with the people. They better be careful modeling South Korea and Singapore they might get a little more than they bargained for. Looking at the demonstrations there against Park now that is a real democracy.
