Washington prepares for Friday’s inaugural festivities

WASHINGTON: -- A group of anti-Trump protesters held a rally in Washington on Wednesday evening (Jan 18) as preparations got under way for the president-elect’s inauguration. Refusefascism.org said they wanted to stop the Trump presidency before it begins.

Meanwhile America’s next leader has taken to Twitter urging people to show up for Friday’s festivities when he becomes the US’s 45th president.

However two New York Congressmen Jerrold Nadler and Adriano Espaillat have become the latest of around 50 Democrats who have said they’ll be staying away from Washington on the auspicious day, criticising what they called Trump’s contempt for civil liberties.

But police in the US capital are expecting vast crowds to witness Trump’s swearing-in. His planning committee are saying as many two million could attend, but police say around 900,000 is more accurate. Either way fences and barriers are being erected to ensure the safety of those hoping to get a glimpse of the historic moment.

D.C. "welcoming" the demagogue baby man president is a bit of stretch.

trump won only FOUR PERCENT of the vote there!!!!!

He's even more popular in Manhattan than D.C.  (where is correctly DETESTED because they know him best for what he is ... a CON MAN).

On the other hand, in nearby Maryland, incoming (virulently anti-gay civil rights) VICE president Pence was welcomed to his new hood with a dance party. A QUEER dance party!

No, the planning committee is probably correct but only if you include those people who are attending for the purpose of protesting Trump's presidency. Bus permits issued for those who will be guests of the event are outnumbered by 4:1 for bus permits for those who will be protesting. In the end it won't matter as Trump will make up whatever attendence he thinks best to stroke his ego.

I believe that Obama in 2008 had 1.8 million guests. Thus, Trump must predict more.

trump's inauguration was poorly attended compared to Obama. Not surprising. He's already very unpopular.

But what is a tad surprising is that his speech did not reach out to his opponents and sincerely try to heal the DEEP DIVISIONS.

It's quite clear he will never even try.

Trump’s inaugural address offers nothing to soothe the worst fears about him

Trump’s inaugural speech offered almost nothing meaningful to assuage any of these fears. Making this more striking still, this comes after Trump lost the popular vote and enters office as the least popular president in decad
