CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) - Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been extradited from a prison in northern Mexico to the United States, the Mexican government said on Thursday, one day before Donald Trump assumes the U.S. presidency.

Guzman was one of the world's most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January 2016. Six months earlier, he had broken out of a high-security penitentiary in central Mexico through a mile-long tunnel.

"The government ... today handed Mr Guzman Loera to the U.S. authorities," the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to a court decision on Thursday rejecting a legal challenge by his lawyers against extradition.

Guzman was being held in a prison in the infamously violent border city of Juarez in the northern state of Chihuahua where his Sinaloa cartel won a bloody drug war against rivals.

His lawyers had sought to block his extradition to the United States.

“It’s a good thing to finally get him to the U.S. side,” said a senior U.S. law enforcement official based in Mexico.

He said he did not think Mexico put “a whole lot of thought” into the timing of the extradition, that comes the day before Trump’s inauguration, “but it certainly isn’t a bad thing.”

What billions of dollars and all that power and control do him any good now?

he's being treated like the low life criminal and the harbinger of death  that he is,

hopefully to never see daylight ever again.....

It's whack a mole with these drug kingpins.  Another is just going to pop up.  Legalization of marijuana will help.  But corruption in Mexico is the biggie.  Hard for the US to change that.

A wall won't help.  I was on the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan earlier this year.  They are now using drones to fly drugs across the border.  Corrupt police, army and government officials are helping and getting massively rich.  And heroin is flowing into Russia and then Europe from this area.

I work every day on the california/mexico border from san diego to yuma.  i see all the border patrol with their atvs, horses, jeeps, helicopters, etc.     there already is a wall, or a fence, to be exact.   it's about 12 ft tall, topped with razor wire, and in most places, it's a double fence,  2 fences 15 ft apart.   the smugglers go under it, over it, through it, every hour.    it will be the same with trump's stupid sh!t wall, the only difference is that the US taxpayers will be billions of dollars poorer.

The “wall” in the end will NOT be ‘tax payer” paid. there are amyany different ways to extract the cost of the ‘wall’ from Mexico. And, in the end, Mexico could end up ‘paying’ way beyond the cost of the ‘wall!’

No matter how Trump collects the funds to pay for the wall, the consumer, in the end, will bear the brunt of the costs.  No way around this.  Increased fees for imports or tariffs always cause the products price to increase.

You know what, most Americans are willing to pay a little more for quality goods! As well as support other Americans! Screw others, why should the USA be the ones to support the balance of the world any longer than it has already?! We’ve given a ‘lifting hand’ long enough!

Nice rant, but you're missing the point.  This has nothing to do with quality goods.  Nor the rest of the world. LOL

Guzman. Guzman has the money to build a wall.

Make a deal with Trump.

Maybe Trump would let him use one of the old tunnels to go back.

Actually that is an incredible idea. Wonder what happens to all of the ill gotten gains that is confiscated by these drug lords? I hope not the same as what I fear here in Thailand.

I will email Trumps team with this idea and credit it to you rabas!!!
