Student appeals to PM for justice after claiming that Kalasin abbot invited her in to the monk's quarters for sex

KALASIN: -- A student in the north eastern province of Kalasin has appealed to prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha for justice after she alleged that an abbot of a leading temple tried to get her to have sex with him.

The student - named only as "Som" videoed what she said was evidence of the invitation that was posted online, reports Sanook.

The abbot then sued her for defamation. A court convicted her and sentenced her to 2 years and 8 months and gave her bail.

The final judgment in the case is expected to be on January 31st.

Now someone has reposted the video and the abbot wants her bail rescinded.

Reporters who went to the temple concerned found that opinion was divided about any wrong doing of the abbot. Many said the rumours were unsubstantiated and that they could have easily been the work of people wanting to discredit the abbot and the temple.

He was not available for comment.

Som claimed that he had invited her in for sex on two occasions and further claimed that he had had sex with many other women. She also said that he took drugs.

She said that the temple is a big one that has a lot of influential people and celebrities among its followers who go there regularly to make merit.

Now she has written to the prime minister to see if he can bring pressure to bear on the case, reported sanook.com.

monks again! Depriving a man of food, drink, sleep, going toilet, and having sex is unnatural. Real man needs all of those ! It's just natural.

Only one outcome here.

Yeah well, you give in order to receive...

My gf was propositioned by a monk at a temple near Hua Hin. He also convinced her to give him her phone number, whereby he began making several propositioning phone called. She eventually had to block his number to prevent the harassment. She is too scared to go to that temple anymore.

I think this happens far more than most people realize.

Sorry young lady you should have seen this coming like an express train.

I would like to see the video b4 i decide. If the girl was guilty of defamation then the abbot should have shown compassion and forgive the girl as how buddhism is preach.

Unless the girl was a child at the time I just don't get what the original issue was. I don't really like coffee but I don't get upset when someone invites me in for a coffee, its just in an invitation. And if I did start showing video's online of this coffee abuser speculating what a bad person they were then I suspect I would be breaking some law or other.

Invitations are often a kind act even if the offer is not to your individual taste, online attempted shaming of someone well that's not really my cup of tea either despite the irony of me commenting on here.

It doesn't seem to make any sense, for if the video is not evidence of any wrongdoing then how could reposting it defame him again, while if it is evidence of wrongdoing then how can he of successfully sued for defamation as the video would of demonstrated her initial claim was truthful.

Forgive

Not a chance with thai defamation laws here to defend the guilty and make money or silence those who have a comment

Monks and Buddhism again not a chance when half of them are like the way they are and more so why they are there?

It is against the rules for monks, if it were proven true he would of been defrocked regardless of her age.

Men being men??? So it's her fault, is it? So, is "just walk away & shut up the same advice you'd give your daughter and/or granddaughter, niece, sister?

The more I read about Thai Monks makes me think of all the fake stuff here so now I add to the list Fake Monks TIT.  Do feel sorry for the girl can't fight city hall and win

Yeah, right...that's the solution.

If, and I do mean if, these allegations are true, you are saying

Ignore the abuse of position.

Ignore the fact others may have been unable to refuse this man.

Ignore the fact his position allows him to use the courts to silence the truth.

Ignore the fact the woman being pressured for sex has no right to complain or use the temple of her choice.

Brilliant, I mean just brilliant, thinking.

Why would she give her phone number - out of interest maybe?

Are you serious? If the abbot had raped her, would your comment still apply?

So, clearly you believe that a MONK inviting a girl to have sex with him was a KIND act?  He was just being KIND to her?   He was not inviting her for a cup of coffee and what he did was against the rules applicable to Buddhist monks.

Using your faulty logic, if someone "invited" me to kill his mother, that is OK because it is just a KIND invitation, which of course I can refuse.  I think you will find that that someone has indeed committed an offence.

Even if she is lying (possible, but I know who I would tend to believe) a prison sentenced of nearly 3 years for defamation is just wrong.

People are robbed in the street, or killed on the roads and fines are handed out - but others are sent to prison for making someone lose face.

The justice system here is screwed up.

You are right.

The defamation law here is used to preserve the traditional power structure and stop ordinary citizens making legitimate (or otherwise) complaints against persons of privilege or the institutions they represent.

The result is inequities, power imbalances and exploitation flowing from the power imbalances continue unchecked.
