Looks like a fairly sleepy township that's also quite spread out. What are the transport options available ? I'm staying in a place that I roughly guessed to be quite central to bars and restaurants (see map link, and red pin for location). Should I consider hiring a pushbike?

I'll be coming in by train, and the station looks less than 1km away so I can walk that. I assume there'll be a bus back to Bangkok on the main road for my return journey. Cursory investigations suggest there are heaps of busses running very often

Again a Q easily been solved by that old-fashioned thing called GUIDEbook. AND always specify if ou talk about town or province. I'll restrict to town.

Only dumb farang take the train there. The BUSes-mostly vans by now btw, leave from the BUSstation, south from trains and moreorless in centre-town, market etc. Thus they do not cruise along that main road. Also short walk from the floating barges used for sleeping there. That farang-centered drinking area is some 1,5-2 kms north of centre and akind of ghetto for them.

As in about ANY smaller Thai provincial town local transp is eihter by moto-sy taxi or by songhthaew-here there are at least 2 regular routes-yes, along that main road. From dawn till dusk and of course ending at market and the usual BigC/Tesco hypermarkets-where else would one want to go.

For the unknowing and havethemoneytoomuch farang there will be the  tukx2 with their inflated prices.

You're dumb, too?

Are you ?

All you have stated is what I already outlined in my opening post. Yes, the train is possible. Yes, I can walk from the station.

So what was the point of your reply ? And why should I have any interest in cavorting with backpackers?

If you are staying in farang street near the bridge, then you are good for the nightlife. A good few bars and lots of good food places. Could not see the link you refer to in your OP. There are a few tour agencies that you can book trips with, but transport is not that easy. I would suggest you hire a bike to get around. You will be able to find transport to and from the bus station.

If you want to do something a little different while you are there. Keep a look out for shops with kayaks outside.

They will drive you up- river and pick you up at the bridge on the way down.

We used a Guy called Tony, about half way between the bridge and the nightlife centre on the left hand side.

He also rents very well maintained scooters and push bikes.
