A new cleanliness law has come into force since its publication in the Royal Gazette on January 15 under which each household will have to pay garbage collection and disposal fees.
garbage koh TaoThe monthly basic fees start with 150 baht for the collection of garbage not exceeding 120 kgs or 600 litres plus 200 baht for the disposal of the same amount of garbage. Garbage exceeding 120 kgs will be charged at similar rates – 150 baht for collection and 200 baht for disposal.

I assume this applies to Samui  as from the ' Samui Times ' but they don't normally post any local news so not sure

Yeah I am not sure either.... I and those around where I live have to take our bags down to the ring road....

I always separate recyclables to separate clear bag... helps those who go around everyday collecting the plastic, tins and glass etc...

A good thing if they enforce payment from all and if the money actually gets used to properly collect and dispose of the rubbish.  Most likely most will not pay, any money will go straight in someones pocket and the rubbish situation will be the same.

If you pay, the community will collect your garbage, also in the smaller sois. We (eq: my Thai GF and me) have a motorbike with "Keep Samui Clean"-sidecar from Tessaban coming every day, same kind lady, taking our garbage bags and clean if some soi-dogs has been searching through the bags and bit them open. Worked very well for the 7 years I had my own house.

As SamuiJimmy, we also separate all reusable waste in clear bags, so it's easy to sort out, and presumably the lady, and perhaps her colleagues also, can make som extra tip on plastic, alu-cans, glass, cardboard, electronics or whatever. If I have some bigger stuff like an old chair, table, or... –we ask her how much to take it away for us, but it has always been free and cleared later same day...:wai:

We pay 300 baht a month, same fee for 7 years – it's 10 baht a day in average – and should it go 50 baht up, I'll gladly pay that also, and with a big smile...

It's not quite that simple Khun Per.

I collect garbage from my customers and then take it to a collection point. I also pay every month for garbage collection.

Almost two years ago I went to the government offices to increase my payment to reflect the number of new customers.

I was asked where I lived and what did I do with the garbage. I told them and I was told that I must not take the garbage to the collection point. They will come and collect. We made an apointment for the driver to come to my area and to tell me the best location for him to collect from. He would be there in the next month or two - meantime, I could still take the garbage to the collection point.

I am still waiting for the driver to come to see me. I am not paying enough for the number of houses that I service. I am still paying for my garbage to be collected and I am also paying extra for one of my staff to take the garbage to the collection point after hours. My staff do seperate bottle, cans and paper etc for re-cycling.

I would happily pay 350 PER VILLA if the garbage was to be collected and disposed of correctly.

As an aside, the other year, the local government changed the person who was collecting the money from me. The amount that I was paying him (and receiving a correct receipt for) was more than the amount that he was giving to the local government office with a copy receipt for the lower amount. I guess that he was keeping the difference. :shock1:

That is the crucial point, isn't it. As long as they just dump it in a landfill without concern for the environment a 10 fold fee increase is unjustified.

This is a huge mistake most Thai people won't pay just burn it or dump it on the roads and jungle. Garbage pickup needs to be paid for by general govt funds in Countries where people have certain attitudes, I have been to Pacific Islands where $10-25 tipping fees are required absolutely covered in rubbish makes Thailand look like Switzerland.
