‘RESIST’: Greenpeace takes the fight to the White House

WASHINGTON: -- The response from Greenpeace to Donald Trump’s decision to revive two major oil pipeline projects – a giant banner that reads ‘RESIST’.

 

“If you were to be sitting in the south lawn of the White House, the Ellipse, right now, you would see this banner framed against the White House. And the symbolism of that, of course, is that we re here specifically to protest this administration,” explained Jason Schwartz, a media officer at Greenpeace.

 

Environmental activists scaled a crane just blocks from the White House to protest what they say is Trump’s climate denial, racism, bigotry and misogyny.

 

Environment vs Fossil fuels

 

One day earlier, the new president resurrected the Keystone XL pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline, it is the latest move to erase his predecessor’s legacy. The projects had become a key battleground between environmentalists and the fossil fuel industry, as well as Native Americans, before Obama blocked them.

 

Making good on campaign promises, Trump said the projects would create thousands of construction jobs. He has also promised to slash US environmental regulation as a way to promote oil drilling and mining.

 

However, its clear he will face stiff resistance from those who want to protect the environment.

I read 2 articles the other day. In the one the writer said that the regulatorary cost of a job are estimated at $20 000 per year. In other words for a company to create one job and to maintain that job costs $20 k per year. Under Obama there was 500 k paages of new business regulations passed. I think a good start would be to bring down this cost which would make it easier for small businesses to create new jobs.

The 2nd article was about the cost passed on to consumers by governments in the name of climate change. According to the article consumers have paid $ 1,5 trillion in additional costs (taxes,levies and additional energy costs). This amount increase every year, but excludes government expenditure on research and funding and subsidies paid for clean energy. Even if the Co2 targets are reached the decrease in earth warming will only be 1/5 of 1 degree C at the end of the century. The question then arise why are consumers burden by these costs if the end result of the actions will have a zero % effect on global warming. If we are serious about Co2 emmisions the target should be higher to enable us to make a real difference.

Trump deserves all of this. For example if you take the oil and coal industries. Trump boasts how these are creating new jobs, and that the financial gains of them override the environmental impact which is very real, and that is undeniable at this point. Even his long time climate denier cabinet members got roped into acknowledging it in congress recently. However more jobs would be generated by moving to clean energy solutions which will not contribute to us destroying the environment. Moreover investing in renewable energy also gives the country energy independence, and is unlimited unlike fossil fuels. So why is he pushing through on this stuff?

Money obviously. His campaign promises make those in the coal and oil industries happy. He got their support, now he is paying them back for that so that big business can make a buck, at the cost of everyone else. And not only everyone else. We know that Trump himself owned stock in the oil company associated with the pipeline he just issued an executive order to approve last year. How is that not a conflict of interest? This is all about making money for the oil and coal industries while they still can.

Can we be more accurate insofar as Greenpeace are protesting against two major oil pipeline projects - NOT Trump per-se.

 

Fingers crossed that Trump doesn't start these 'projects' again.

 

If he does, then it will clearly show that he has no interest in the environment.

There are so many of trump's policies worthy of RESISTANCE that it's going to be quite a problem to decide which ones to focus on. The RESISTANCE can't win them all against the almost total power of trump and it may not be able to win ANYTHING. Just keeping it real. DARK times.
