Prayut

BANGKOK: -- The stalled effort for national reconciliation has been kick-started once again as we enter what is supposed to be the last year of the coup-installed regime.

But before rushing to consider what the best approach is to bring harmony, we need to pause and think again about whether the scheme will be helpful, and to whom, and perhaps whether we need it at all.

With a politically eventful 2016 behind us, everything seemed to be falling into place for the finale of undemocratic rule. The main focus of politics in the year ahead was to pass organic laws and organise the first election since 2011.

But the limelight suddenly shifted dramatically as chief coup-maker and Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha unveiled a new scheme he said he had cooked up over the New Year holiday. Designed to finally achieve reform and reconciliation, the scheme has become a focal point for key government policies as well as news coverage.

I suspect the troubles in the South will be successfully addressed long before any sort of "reconciliation" is accomplished.

This assumes the real definition of 'reconciliation', and not the Junta's definition.

"Will it be exploited to create conditions that will enable the authorities to justify postponement of an election?"

My feelings exactly when the General announced his cunning plan so late in the day.

The English saying is divide and rule. What Sutep and the junta have done as pawns of the puppet masters is exactly that. They divide the population among colour codes and while the people fight each other the elites fill their pockets. At some time however the people will learn and then it will be pitch fork time.

That pretty well sums it up. Each person depending on their birth has a social standing from birth going forward. They are constantly reminded of this till they become believers. My g/f has a mind like a computer waiting to be programmed but she lacked the opportunity sooo there is no equal opportunity you play the cards your dealt. Breaking out of the mold here is hard but it can be done. I am trying to break her out of hers by showing her to see opportunity when it arises and seize it. Seize the moment.
