Abhisit opposes Prayut’s idea of lighter charges for bribe-givers

By THE SUNDAY NATION

DEMOCRAT PARTY leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday called on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to reconsider his instruction on amending bribery laws that would spare bribe-givers from criminal charges.

Abhisit said he wanted the premier to think thoroughly about the issue, as bribe-givers are also offenders and should be subjected to legal action. He said not doing so would convey the message that they had not committed any wrongdoings. This would send a wrong signal in corruption suppression, as absolution of such offences would suggest bribery is not illegal.

The Democrat leader said he wanted the government to look for alternatives from regulations set in other laws, including an election law that allows voters who sell their votes to inform authorities and. The penalty for their offence could then be reduced or waived.

“The premier broached the possibility of more flexibility in prosecution by charging the bribe-givers with only civil lawsuits…so that the state can benefit from their cooperation.

I would love the hear his definitions of  "benefits" and "cooperation".

It's the ongoing political justification: "They might be crooks, but they are our crooks".

Abhisit knows there are guidelines and policy where severe penalties for bribery and corruption are applied in the global trade lanes, would be difficult for any country to try and dilute or circumvent this policy. His advice is sound.

I think he means "bribe offerers". There is no "bribe giving" until there is "bribe acceptance". So in reality offing a bribe is a petty offence providing it is not accepted. However bribe givers and takers should be treated equally in the eyes of the law.

Could anyone seriously believe that in Thailand any bribe offer would be refused other than on the grounds that it was too low.

"...Corruption takes place in countries without democracy, rather than the other way around due to lack of checks and balances..."

Just depends on which way you look at it !!!

The junta and its cronies already have "blanket" protection from any prosecution under Article 44.

Flagging the possibility of charging bribe-givers with only civil lawsuits is simply their way of extending this to also accommodate their elite pals who are currently not under that "blanket" !!!

Both Junta and yellows don't have any idea what democracy is , and if they do know, they don't give a sh*t.....

So why this propaganda ones more.

Oh, don't spoil the effect. Mark is doing a good job backing up the PM. Just you wait, one year from now Mark will be back in the drivers seat. Steering Thailand through all the obstacles in it's way. I wonder if Suthep will join him as Deputy PM again.

I hope not , to both, they didn't drive well at all, Mark will also never get elected how much the Junta and their lovers would want that.

Never liked that babyface in that driver seat.

Just part of pretending to oppose the junta and distance himself in the hope the Thai people wil think he has some balls rather than the jellyback he is.

Seem to remember the same last time.

What the hell is going on around the world with these politicians? Romania has just seen the biggest crowds protesting on the streets since the overthrow of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu over virtually the same issue.

Do they think the people are entirely dumb?

The Romanian government has backed down from plans to decriminalise corruption offences after days of mass protests in Bucharest.

Additionally, if bribe givers are not punished, anyone can make accusations by pretending to have bribed someone. Oh! Maybe it was the initial objective! :)

The Right Honourable Abhisit is if anything consistent in his drive to snuff out corruption. Good on him.

anything but consistent apart from weakness and he is NOT called 'The Right Honourable'  so stop trolling

The Right Honourable (The Rt Hon. or Rt Hon.) is an honorific style traditionally applied to certain persons and to certain collective bodies in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, some other Commonwealth realms, the Anglophone Caribbean, Mauritius and occasionally elsewhere. Not Thailand

How come all of a sudden Abihist is popping up in the news speaking such defiant tones. I smell a coronation going on here and now he speaks forth to give the impression that he is a real contender under the watchful eye of Prayuth.

Of course the junta wants to protect the bribe givers.

Bribe Givers = the rich powerful well-connected people

Bribe Takers = the poor bureaucrats

This is laughable... it's still silly Sunday.... hey! Lets lock up the people paying us outrageous bribes, which enable us to bribe official police exam invigilators.. etc etc... . not going to happen.

a nine round for Abhisit is more likely ( not talking a half piss take of a round of golf)
