Hello,

I've recently moved from Pattaya to Bangkok. In Pattaya, I was used to having dozens of TV channels even when having no explicit contract with a company (I think it was named Sophon TV).

In Bangkok however, where I'm living in the Khlong Toey area, when I plug in the antenna cable, I only get 2 or 3 very distorted channels.

Which options would you guys recommend me when I only stay for 2-3 months for Internet and TV?

Obviously, I wouldn't want anything that forces me to pay a lot only for equipment or deposits. But at least a few of the common TV channels (local Thai and a few news channels) would be nice to have. I'm also open to alternative solutions like Internet streaming etc., if it makes sense.

Also, I'd need Internet (short contract). Would you recommend 3BB or another adSL provider, or are there others that are already better? I could also thether from my smartphone to keep it simple, but am not sure whether this would be economical in terms of speed and cost.

thanks, p.

If you are in a Condo, then as ThaiVisa member KittenKong suggested in this Pattaya-based inquiry, you may be able to contract Cable TV and get Broadband Internet through that. Ask the management of your rental what's available.

Internet & TV in Pattaya.

You may be in a good location to pick up Digital TV over-the-air broadcasts, but the majority of the programs will be in Thai. If you want English, or another language, then an subscribing to an IPTV package or some other Internet delivered media would probably be preferred.

Thanks for the reply, but my question is about Bangkok, where I'm living right now.

I'd prefer over-the-air broadcasts, but since I don't even get a single channel clearly (2 Thai ones heavily distored, 2 or 3 hardly identifiable), it doesn't seem as if the antenna cable in my apartment is even connected to a roof antenna, maybe it's just connected to the in-house TrueTV router. Or should I always get at least a few channels through the antenna cable?

The suggestion to ask your building manager about Cable Internet applies, the advise wasn't location dependent.

A coax cable sticking out of a wall can be to anything (Antenna, Sat, MATV, CATV) or even nothing. Easy enough to ask the manager about it.  Alternatively, you can buy a cheap indoor digital antenna to pick up the OTA channels available in Bangkok.

...also suggest trying to follow the coaxial cable, see where it leads. Who knows what you'll find on the other end.

In the first link I offered you I had suggested short-term alternatives to the OP, but then KittenKong had to come along and offer up a better suggestion, asking the manager about a short-term subscription to Cable TV and Internet, which seems to have worked out just fine and dandy for that original poster.
