rooster59
Hundreds of immigrants arrested in 'routine' U.S. enforcement surge By Sharon Bernstein and Kristina Cooke (Reuters) - U.S. federal immigration agents arrested hundreds of undocumented immigrants in at least four states this week in what officials on Friday called routine enforcement actions. Reports of immigration sweeps this week sparked concern among immigration advocates and families, coming on the heels of President Donald Trump's executive order barring refugees and immigrants from seven majority-Muslim nations. That order is currently on hold. "The fear coursing through immigrant homes and the native-born Americans who love immigrants as friends and family is palpable," Ali Noorani, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, said in a statement. "Reports of raids in immigrant communities are a grave concern." The enforcement actions took place in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and surrounding areas, said David Marin, director of enforcement and removal for the Los Angeles field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Only five of 161 people arrested in Southern California would not have been enforcement priorities under the Obama administration, he said. The agency did not release a total number of detainees. The Atlanta office, which covers three states, arrested 200 people, Bryan Cox, a spokesman for the office, said. The 161 arrests in the Los Angeles area were made in a region that included seven highly populated counties, Marin said. Marin called the five-day operation an "enforcement surge." In a conference call with reporters, he said that such actions were routine, pointing to one last summer in Los Angeles under former President Barack Obama. "The rash of these recent reports about ICE checkpoints and random sweeps, that’s all false and that’s dangerous and irresponsible," Marin said. "Reports like that create a panic.” He said that of the people arrested in Southern California, only 10 did not have criminal records. Of those, five had prior deportation orders. Michael Kagan, a professor of immigration law at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, said immigration advocates are concerned that the arrests could signal the beginning of more aggressive enforcement and increased deportations under Trump. "It sounds as if the majority are people who would have been priorities under Obama as well," Kagan said in a telephone interview. "But the others may indicate the first edge of a new wave of arrests and deportations." Trump recently broadened the categories of people who could be targeted for immigration enforcement to anyone who had been charged with a crime, removing an Obama-era exception for people convicted of traffic misdemeanors, Kagan said. -- © Copyright Reuters 2017-02-

They seem to advocate that providing illegal immigrants aren't breaking any other laws then the government should turn a blind eye to the serious immigration laws they did vote. Usual liberal PC attitude to the law - it's what we say it is, not what it actually is. Love the way some Muslim states that fear is running through immigrants and friends of immigrants - why? All legal immigrants have nothing to fear. Only illegal ones. But of course, they'd prefer to overlook that little point.
carken
*New Immigration Laws* 1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools. 2. All ballots will be in this nation's language. 3. All government business will be conducted in our language. 4. Non-residents will NOT have the right to vote no matter how long they are here. 5. Non-citizens will NEVER be able to hold political office. 6. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, or any other government assistance programs. Any who are a burden will be deported. 7. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount at least equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage. 8. If foreigners come here and buy land, their options will be restricted. Certain parcels including waterfront property are reserved for citizens naturally born into this country. 9. Foreigners may have NO protests; NO demonstrations, NO waving of a foreign flag, no political organizing, NO bad-mouthing our president or his policies. These will lead to deportation. 10 If you do come to this country illegally, you will be actively hunted and, when caught, sent to jail until your deportation can be arranged. All assets will be taken from you. Too strict you say? The above laws are the current immigration laws of MEXICO! ROFLMAO .... don't'cha jus love these "got'cha" emails! stander
The Left has been outsmarted, outclassed, and outwitted by a financial GIANT that is so far above their pay grades they just don't get, a BIG reason for that is no philosophy, no inner peace, they are always at war, mostly with themselves. Who are you talking about? A person known to be multiply bankrupt (financially) at least? A person in the highest office who refuses to subject his financials for audit? Regarding class and wit and philosophy it is a taste thing. ...or general lack of any of it. I remind you, that 'America' is not just a country but an idea, too. Donald has very little horizon so dispels the latter. This last point is one you just don't get and of greatest concern globally because Donald is an infantile in the highest office known. And dangerous to all. An American national shame.

Ironically, in another way i agree with you, although i did laugh at the phrasing of "enough americans". Graham Greene eat your heart out! If national interests abroad are the sole focus of new international relationships under Donald Trump, then the current rethinking that is happening domestically is a good trump factor too. What nation wants to secure their future to this kind of variable alliance. We are a wee immature in outlook in Aus regarding security and may time to seek more independence. Certainly happening with DT.

drbill
The headline appears to be a disconnect from the article and the news as reported in the WSJ and WP. At least they appear to be targeting many criminals for a change. For the last dozen years they appeared to concentrate their efforts disproportionately on tax paying successful illegal Asians . Credo
Other than a very small segment of people and a few representatives, the vast majority of people, including the liberals do not have a problem with enforcement of immigration rules. A lot of the problem comes when the Immigration Officials expect the local law enforcement agencies to do their job. The local police, in pursuit of a criminal, may not have time to check everyone they question about their immigration status. Traffic police, may not have time to check if someone is legal or not. I think people also object to routinely stopping people and checking their immigration status as they go about their ordinary business.

Ulic
Not really sure how this can be considered a surge when there are an estimated 11- 20 million illegal immigrants in the US. The numbers talked about in the article are a rounding error in the struggle to coming to terms with enforcing the laws of the land as they relate to immigration. A few hundred arrested, 11-20 million illegally in the US. Get real. Probably more to worry about crossing the street than being arrested by ICE. stander
Now that President Trump is enforcing immigration law, the media will run endless sob stories about hard-working mothers being separated from their kids and zero news stories about who is really being targeted for deportation; felons and gang-bangers. alex8912
Imagine if a white person born in the USA had been found to be using a fake social security number now or in the past what would happen? There are many surprising things like getting arrested, large fines and/or going to jail. When an illegal does this they are often supported or praised or even put on CNN for it! (Often by white people) huh

mtls2005
President Obama was no slouch when it came to deportations. In fact, one could argue that he set up robust process and supporting infrastructure to accomplish this task, which the current administration continues to utilize. http://blogs.reuters.com/data-dive/2015/02/25/tracking-obamas-deportation-numbers/
