We already know how to achieve reconciliation: tackle inequality
By Attayuth Bootsripoom

BANGKOK: -- The government’s latest reconciliation effort is underway with a Defence Ministry committee inviting political parties to discuss ways of achieving national unity.

Some observers are hopeful this fresh attempt can bridge the tension-filled divide between opposing political factions. Others doubt we will see light at the end of the tunnel any time soon.

Scepticism seems inevitable given that several committees tasked with the same mission have made little headway under previous governments. Among them were panels headed by such luminaries as former prime minister Anand Panyarachun, prominent social critic Prawase Wasi, former attorney general Kanit Nanakorn, ex-senator Direk Thungfang, and even former coup leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.

Each conducted its own inquiry into the root causes of the conflict and how reconciliation could be reached. They also offered suggestions based on public testimony by people on both sides of the divide.

"The panel’s final report diagnosed inequality of access to national resources as the main culprit."

Is that because the entitled own most of the country ?

Look at the poor young man who brewed his own beer.  Look how he was treated.  Nothing will change.

Why the Defense Minister? But I guess with a nation under military control, any open political discussion is a potential threat to the nation's security.

It might be more (albeit superficially) credible that the Minister of Justice lead reconciliation discussions as the perception might be that it is nonpolitical, albeit again still part of the junta government.

Quite honestly if you've ever had anything to do with Thai elite they are not interested in the other people as they call them.................................................:coffee1:

Hi so elitists wondering how to reconcile with the population they cannot possibly relate to and care not to...

Your post doesn't make sense. A Hi so is someone who pretends to be high-class when they are definitely not . They Are Despised by Thais  of all classes. Lady Kai was a perfect example of a Hi so!

Ask the political party leaders how to do it.

That would be  like asking some party leaders how do you want things set up so you can return quickly and openly to the trough?

I cannot believe that anybody in the paymasters paid gang of thieves or his red army:

- Are knowledgeable or insightful on this subject or will gave any form of balanced answers which can quickly & obviously build a balanced and fair civil society, with serious mechanisms to build and protect real democracy.

I also believe that within the other parties the numbers of folks who are seriously knowledgeable or insightful could be counted on one hand, or less.

IMHO any meaningful dialogue will only only from those without vested interests.

So that excludes the present political parties as well as the army, right?

Don't be foolish.

Only those who are on the bottom levels are concerned about ;inequality' in Thailand or any other country.

Those at the top levels are quite happy with their privelges  either her in Thailand or elsewhere.

Reconcilation  won't change that

From the full article:

"Each conducted its own inquiry into the root causes of the conflict and how reconciliation could be reached. They also offered suggestions based on public testimony by people on both sides of the divide."

"Few of their proposals were ever put into practice, rendering their efforts a waste of time and money. The powers-that-be merely cherry-picked a few “safe” proposals while discarding any that might threaten their status or interests."

My complements to The Nation for printing the truth.

Why mention other countries? Is it because it makes the junta look more respectable in the eyes of the fanboys? This is THAI Visa Forum.

I've noticed them going from junta lapdogs to angry terriers. Somebody must've pissed in their cereal. Shouldn't be long before a crackdown.

Nobody will object about reducing inequalities, of course. However by stating that, they indirectly put the responsibility of conflict on the shoulders of the "less equal". It seems to me that it was rather the others who could not stand that the "less equal" people got the same rights as them, i. e. to choose a government, get access to infrastructures,  schools, etc...
